So I've seen quite a few people post pictures of sabers they've customized by making a gash like hole by the emitter to give it a well used / battle damaged look. I want to try something similar, but I am a poor college kid who wants to do it to a dark initiate v2. I don't have a lot of resources right now, so I was thinking a hammer and nail would work as a last resort but I don't want to damage the hilt to where I can't put a blade in it. Any tips would be awesome. Thanks.

Shiny saber you got there, let me fix that.

A hammer and nail will hurt you and your hilt.
I do this type of weathering regularly - as suggested it requires a dremel tool, some practice, and a little bravery.
