Can anybody recommend a good knee protection that isn't a shin guard combination? I have some of those but they slide a lot so I just want some good heavy duty knee pads and separate shin guards

Problem with these is: they will slide, if not fixed to the pants. They are meant for use with the SPES-fencingpants.

My girlfriend has some leg-protectors meant for downhill-biking, that are fixed with crossing straps behind the knee. They don't slide much.

Just had to look at them ...  Wink
http://www.vitalmtb.com/product/guide/Knee-Shin-Pads,56/Fox-Racing/Fox-Launch-Knee-Shin-Guard,3556

They are a shin-knee combo - but basically, it's the cross-strapping that makes them fit better. Maybe there are just knee-caps fitted that way out there (or you could solve te problem with a sharp knife ...).
I use some without the cross-strapping (when I bother to use any), and they tend to slide.

Are you looking for soft pads or plastic guards?

When I want something soft for things like kneeling on the ground or doing rolls, I use basic volleyball knee pads.  When I want something plastic and solid against getting hit with an opponents saber I use these from Amazon.  The company I bought them from doesn't have a knee-only version btu I found these as well that look like they would ne really great against slipping down your leg.
