Oscars 2017 Predictions

So, I always look forward to the Oscars every year, even though the full ceremony is no longer broadcast on terrestrial tv in the UK anymore. That being said, I thought I would join in the grand tradition of predicting who will win in the "big" categories.

I know that there are more than just these categories but i purposely left them off the list in order to keep this post small. Who do you guys think will win in each category and do you care about the Oscars?

Want to win: Natalie Portman (Jackie)
Think will win: Emma Stone (La La Land)

LEAD ACTOR:
Want to win: Denzel Washington (Fences)
Think will win: Denzel Washington (Fences)

BEST DIRECTOR:
Want to win: Denis Villeneuve (Arrival)
Think will win: Damin Chazelle (La La Land)

BEST ANIMATED PICTURE:
Want to win: Kubo and the Two Strings
Think will win: Zootopia

BEST PICTURE:
Want to win: Moonlight
Think will win: La La Land

I've decided to give running commentary throughout the awards as to whether my predictions were right or not.

Want to win: Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
Think will win: Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)

And he won! And deservedly so. Speech wise the one he gave at the Golden Gloves was more powerful but this was more moving. You could tell he was almost overwhelmed (and humbled) by the win.

And she won, and very deservedly so. It was a fantastic performance. Really emotional speech too.

Always the most bittersweet moment of any Oscars: the In Memoriam section, where we remember all those legends of the industry that have helped create so many fantastic and memorable movie experiences over the years. RIP to all the greats who we have lost.

BEST DIRECTOR:
Want to win: Denis Villeneuve (Arrival)
Think will win: Damin Chazelle (La La Land)

And with the win Damien Chazelle becomes the youngest person in history to win Best Director Oscar (he's just 32).

My first wrong prediction of the evening. Casey Affleck wins for Manchester by the Sea. Must confess, I haven't seen the movie so can't comment, but I've heard it's a great performance. And the Academy obviously thought so too. Well done to the younger (and I've always said) more talented Affleck.

And we're back on track with my predictions. It was in Birdman when I first realised exactly how great an actress Emma Stone was and her winning the Oscar for La La Land is well deserved.
