May I ask Calon why he has an aversion to R rated movies? Is it because his parents won't allow to watch movies of that rating or does he just think he'll not like them yet?

IIRC, he's under 18 and his parents are rather religious.

the teen in me thinks he should just watch them and not tell them. what they don't know can't hurt them (worked for me a lot of the time)

Ok, can someone explain to me the ratings system in America/Canada? Obviously I know what PG and below are. in the UK our ratings are:

18 - 18 and over
15 - 15 and over
12a - Under 12s must be accompanied by an adult
12 - 12 and over
PG
U

Where would PG-13 and R ratings fall on that list?

PG-13 is pretty much an amalgam of "12a", and "15 and over." Parental guidance is suggested for anyone under the age of 13, but not required.

R means there will be no admittance for anyone under the age of 17 without an adult.

Was just looking at the ratings on some of my blu-ray - Deadpool is 15 Watchmen is 18, but both are classed as R in America. Seems like R is a really broad rating for you guys.

They're a rating guide for who can or should watch a movie in the theater.

G (General Audiences) – All Ages Are Admitted. Extremely family friendly.

PG (Parental Guidance Suggested) – Some Material May Not Be Suitable For Children. Might have some light swearing or some adult situations.

PG-13 (Parents Strongly Cautioned) – Some Material May Be Inappropriate For Children Under 13. Decent amount of swearing, including one (and only one) use of the F-bomb. Violence gets harder here. Might also have some suggestive content in terms of sexual relations, just nothing specific.

R (Restricted) – Under 17 Requires Accompanying Parent Or Adult Guardian. Can include violence galore, excessive swearing, nudity, strong sexual content.

NC-17 (Adults Only) – No One 17 and Under Admitted. Clearly adult content in terms of situations, swearing, nudity, etc. This used to be an X-rating (Midnight Cowboy and A Clockwork Orange were originally rated X), but they decided to separate it into a separate category from the X-rated films to differentiate it from porn.

There's also two other ratings that are technically not ratings. NR (Not Rated) and UR (Unrated). These are reserved for movies where the producers didn't want to bother with the rating system for the sake of the movie's completeness or for mainstream movies where content cut to get an R rating is restored to the film, again, for the sake of completeness.

You can thank the MPAA for that.

Their a private organization that polices movies, and refuses to publicize their standards for ratings. Which as you've seen, are somewhat arbitrary.

Recently, Kevin Smith's was given an R rating specifically for, "a drawing of cartoon tesitcles on the back of a book". The decision was ultimately overturned, and the movie was rated PG-13, but that is just one case of the MPAA's subjectivity. If they don't like a particular person, or message with a movie, they will go out of their way to try, and make that movie less accessible.

Fortunately thanks to a lot of mainstream media I'm aware of the MPAA and they're "issues" (especially with the colour red).

What's your opinion on it?

There are others:

Drag Me To Hell

The Final Girls (not to be confused with Final Girl)

The Sixth Sense (this was back when M.Night Shyamaramalamadingdong was making good movies)

The Others

The Ring

The Grudge

Mama

Arachnophobia

Night of the Comet

Eight Legged Freaks (more horror comedy)

Will get back on all of them once I finish Googling.

May I ask Calon why he has an aversion to R rated movies? Is it because his parents won't allow to watch movies of that rating?

Bingo. I'm not sure if I even want to watch that kind of stuff. I don't like excessive language and while the gore in the extended edition of The Hobbit: Battle of 5 Armies didn't bother me, I wouldn't want to watch it through a whole movie.

Jaws was originally rated R, but after they pulled some of the more gruesome scenes, it was brought down to PG. That said, there's the "ratings creep" to take into account. Many movies rated R back in the day just don't qualify for it today. Jaws is one of them. Even with all the footage, as a 41 year old movie, I would only rate it a PG-13.

From IMDb alone it's looking like my top choice. . .

Sheesh, I watch one episode of Arrow and there's this many new posts. Y'all talk to much.

do you guys in America and Canada have ratings for your video games? We have them here in the UK. However, I'm not sure if the ratings for video games correlate with the movies. If it doesn't then the ratings system is a joke, as they is so much gore and violence in games that kids can play and yet when it comes to a movie the ratings body say "not too much violence, no blood, no gore". (This could start a whole other conversation about what is and isn't acceptable, so I'm going to log out now before that begins)

Early Childhood (EC)
Games with this rating contain content which the ESRB believes is suitable for young children ages 3 and older. Games that fall under this rating are typically educational games intended for a preschool audience, and do not contain any inappropriate or objectionable content.

Everyone (E)
Games with this rating contain content which the ESRB believes is suitable for a general audience; they can contain infrequent use of "mild"/cartoon violence and mild language. Until January 1, 1998, when it was renamed "Everyone", this rating was known as Kids to Adults (K-A).

Everyone 10+ (E10+)
Games with this rating contain content which the ESRB believes is suitable for those aged 10 years and older. They can contain a greater amount of violence, mild language, crude humor, or suggestive content than the standard "Everyone" rating can accommodate, but not to the same extent as the "Teen" rating.

Teen (T)
Games with this rating contain content which the ESRB believes is suitable for those aged 13 years and older; they can contain moderate amounts of violence (including small amounts of blood), mild to moderate use of strong language or suggestive themes, and crude humor.

Mature (M)
Games with this rating contain content which the ESRB believes is suitable for those aged 17 years and older; they can contain content with an impact higher than the "Teen" rating can accommodate, including intense and/or realistic portrayals of violence (such as blood, gore, mutilation, and depictions of death), stronger sexual themes and content, partial nudity, and more frequent use of strong language.

Adults Only (AO)
Games with this rating contain content which the ESRB believes is unsuitable for those under 18 years of age; they can contain content with an impact higher than the "Mature" rating can accommodate, including strong sexual themes and content, graphic nudity, or extreme portrayals of violence. The majority of AO-rated games are adult video games with pornographic content: the ESRB has seldom issued the AO rating solely for violence.

Thanks. Just checked and in the UK the ratings for games set by PEGI (Pan European Game Information) are:

3
7
12
16
18

Always had a bit of a thing for Robin Tunney...
She was one of the reasons I loved The Mentalist. The other was Amanda Righetti. And of course Simon Baker as Patrick Jane
