Environment wise I would love to..... But the wife hates the cold and Alaska has a very high cost of living.  I'd settle for a place that actually has discernible seasons.

The environment you seek is in Michigan. However, for reasons I can't discuss on the forum, I also advise staying away from Michigan.

Minnesota and Wisconsin are also options.

Cost of living is probably the worst part. Everything else about AK is perfect. In Interior Alaska we basically go from Summer to Winter and back. Spring and Fall usually last about 1 month each (though this Fall has been nearly 3 [it hasn't snowed at my house yet, so it is still fall, but it is supposed to snow today]). We also have over 150℉ change between summer and winter, which is insane, but I love it. I don't think I would ever want to move out of Alaska, but I probably would if I had to.

EDIT: It is snowing now!!!!!!!!!!!!

That moment when your fourth grade son tests at the seventh grade reading level...no wonder he says he's bored when I tell him to read; I'm giving him the wrong stuff - the fourth grade reading list is a joke to him right now.

Just handed him my copy of Heir To the Empire and his eyes lit up.

Good Choice.  I feel his pain, the one thing I had over everyone else at school was my reading ability.  I'll never forget the day my 5th grade teacher saw me reading Beowulf in free time and questioned whether I even knew what was happening in the story.  When I gave her a mini synopsis up to that point..she actually thought I was lying and someone just told me about it.  She had a meeting with my mom in which my mom ripped her a new one for accusing me of lying.

"Here, give this book a shot.  It takes place after Return of the Jedi."
"How many pages is it?"
"Um, about 400 or so."
"Oh, nice.  Thanks."

The book he had to read over the summer and do a worksheet on, he burned through the book in about an hour.  And gave me a full summary, so I know he read it.  Now that I know what he can handle, I'm gonna hook him up with the good stuff.

What's he into other than Star Wars?

Give him LOTR and The Hobbit. Then if that is too easy, the Silmarillion.

Agreed on that point.  Dune is another good one of course. Can't forget the classics though like Dickens, Hemingway, Twain etc.  Give him an edge later in School when he already has a handle on the authors they will make him read.

Haven't read Dune yet (decided to push it off since the movie isn't coming out this year anymore), but I agree with the classics. All those choices are great, I read The Old Man and the Sea this year for the first time, and it is one of my favorite books of the year (but it is short). There are sooo many great authors out there (whether living or not), that there should be no problem finding books to read that are more difficult that 4th grade.
