Still waiting on my first saber and was wondering if knurled thumb screws are any good for replacing the set screw used to retain the blade?  Just thinking that it might be nice to have a quicker way of changing blades and add a little customization, if so what size is needed, it looks like the set screws that come standard are 8/32, is that correct?  What length?

Would the knurled thumb screws that come on the menace work for that purpose or are they too big?

Yes, many people use these, I've read that they work fine.  8/32 is indeed the thread size, length varies by hilt.

I bought a bunch that are 3/16 or .3 inch long and they don't fit most of the hilts other than maybe the lower end ones.  My Arbiter I put on a Allen head screw size 8-32 and I had to get 1/2 inch long. The Allen head screws work great because they can be used as a thumb screw and are very small. Plus every hardware store has them.

The best thing to do is buy a batch of .5 or .75 inch ones and cut them to fit each hilt.

Why waste the time cutting them and then having to fix it after you messed up the threads.  See image above.

I should also mention they come in silver they are just harder to find.

It depends on what you consider a "waste of time."  I don't think cutting/grinding a screw is all that time consuming nor difficult, and it's best to get an exact fit, especially for hilts with parts that rattle.  (Electrum Wind, for one)

I guess it's not a waste of time, sorry for the offense. I have ruined threads before and I'm sure if you have done this you have found the screw doesn't want to fit on after it's been mangled with. Just thought it would be an easier option for Edon.

It's all good, I'm not offended or easily offended.  Indeed, some people may not want to go to that trouble or ruin something.  Me, I'm not afraid to break things.  Though, that's one reason I suggested buying them in batches.  Spares.  Wink

Also the gap on this particular hilt is 1/16 of an inch. So not a biggie. I think your going to struggle with a tight fit without screwing up. Plus you might mark up your hilt after time and not to mention the blade can indent to the point where the screw can no longer tighten. Like I said a waste of time.😉

Again, it depends on the hilt.  If you have a hilt with pieces that rattle around without a 100% snug fit, then it's worth the time.  If you're using an emitter like the one you pictured, it's not a big deal.

As for marking the hilt, meh.  Scratches add character.  Wink

Next time you do it, put a nut on the screw first. Then when you cut the excess thread off, wind the nut off and it will clean the thread up for you and it will fit in the hole without wrecking it.

Isola that's genius, I don't know why I never thought of that. I'm doing that.

Not in the UK. Metric system rather gets in the way, and when you do find someplace that sells something in the right ballpark, they don't really cater to non--trade buyers. Want 1000 for £60? Sure. Want 10 for 60p? Get out of here.

I've just tried another ebay seller, though. I think this is the third or fourth... We'll see if they're selling what I'm after.

If you can't find any nearby or on eBay that work, I've gotten a few from "the other guys" that work excellently. It really makes removing the blade for a plug so I can wear my saber out a snap process. Just make sure before buying that the length is close enough--I find a little excess doesn't hurt.
