I've recently started using a Soresu mindset in my saber sparing and I have to say it is a VERY important Form that I feel a lot of people may over look or misinterpret.  In my application here are some of my main points to maintain:

-wait for oncoming aggression and react appropriately be it blade work or footwork

-only strike the opponent with absolute certainty of success

-remain patient and don't over extend

I came to study soresu because I myself have overlooked it and as a result have had a pretty poor defense.

Here's a playlist of me trying it after a week of study and drills consisting of blocks parries evasions and orbits.

Soresu really doesnt get as much credit as it deserves but it's a fascinating style. The opening stance alone says a lot about the form and the practitioner because its such a good passive and defensive position. There's no great way to strike from that opening stance, (compare it to djem so, attaru, juyo, or even shi cho)  but it's also a solid, balanced, and defensive position to be in for inviting an attack.

Yes it screams: come at me. Like neo in the matrix. The angle at which the blade is held is great for hiding blade length without putting it behind you. With the open hand I sometimes incorporate a hand feint or as I call it "force push"

Oh yeah I hadnt thought of that but yeah it kind of minimizes the blade, another effort to draw another attack. And the legs are wide and well balanced
