It's quite a topic, hard to get on top of it but fortunately the forum has some previous material you can take a look at. Without being fully comprehensive here's one way to walk along: http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=35174.0

This is my take on it.
Basically it brings everything closer to the body. As a combat strategy, there is not much to it. From a performance standpoint, it adds a lot of variety.

I find most of my speed and flow in the reverse grip. Like Cephalus stated, you just have to mind the blade’s proximity to say...the back of your head😬( there may have been a few solid smacks upside my own head in my learning) and other important body bits- but the variety it adds is huge. Especially for keeping the blade moving in front of you without hand switches. Or perhaps i’ve just become personally ridiculously fond of reverse grip🤔 And that’s based on the artistry, as for combat/choreography, i typically use it for transitions and flourishes- fore grip is generally more stable for blocking and blade control.

Looks great when your spinning/manipulating the saber for a Demo. Personally, and this is more a combat statement, I rarely go reverse grip.

As someone who tends to hang around the Combat section on this forum, I'm inclined to agree with the others here - not much combat viability. That said, I also agree that it's an excellent tool for performance! Mixes up the mechanics of your spins slightly, and switching back and forth between the two grips fluidly can be a neat visual on its own.

normally I'd make a mention to some Kali combat applications...but I'll pass this on to someone else. Only because I dont like reverse grip. The few at the Academy that use it tend to have it be more of a shield/sliding leverage technique. That being said, IMO it shortens the range too much and requires more " Body English " to deliver any power blows worth while.
Now give me a knife, im icepick grip all day!

Right ... to me, reverse grip is more efficient with small blades ...
