So something I've been wondering about -   if you're not a Jedi, Sith, Rebel Fighter, Imperial Soldier or Trooper or technician/smuggler type, what exactly do your clothes look like?

It seems like most everything I've seen tends to be robes, flight suits/jump suits, and various square-ish flight jackets.   But what sort of fashions do "regular" people wear?
The few movie instances I can think of "regular" people are the Canto Bight casino scenes, the Podracing crowds and markets of Tatooine, some of the Coruscant and Naboo scenes, perhaps, and maybe the main cast of Rogue One - but for the most part, we see very few "regular joe" types in the films.

I've been wondering about cosplaying outfits that are just "I'm a random technician out on the rim" or something like that, and it got me wondering about what the rest of the galaxy wears from day to day.  I have friends wanting to do a SW tabletop of a ship of "rebel smuggler types" and trying to figure out what the fashions would be, especially to extrapolate various fashion looks (a Jedi who's not wearing traditional robes as disguise, freighter pilots, etc.)

I've got the Visual Encyclopedia waiting for me at my local library, so I'll be picking that up after work and checking it out. Other than the visual encyclopedia, are there other visual/art books that would help to look at?   Any suggestions of things to look at for inspiration?

Thanks,
-GT

The Clone Wars tv show is a great reference, especially the episodes in the underworld of Coruscant. I'm pretty sure that anything can be Star Wars, as long as you make it either pristine, or dirty.

The Visual Encyclopedia is a good start. I got it for Christmas and let me tell you it is very much an encyclopedia in that it gives you some great photos but not a ton of info depending on what you are looking at. Most of the clothing in Star Wars revolves around where the characters are. Tattooine inhabitants look vastly different than Nabooians and vice versa. Coruscant is a melting pot of all types of fashions (which is kind of humorous because they frequently mention the fashions of the planet in many of the new canon novels.) The best thing to do would probably be to take a trip through the films but instead of actually watching the movie you're focusing solely on costumes instead. You'll probably be amazed at how much information you'll get as well as a special appreciation for the film's costuming department. The movies are bursting at the seams with costumes.

You mentioned "regular joes" and the first character that popped into my head was Elan Sleazebaggano, or better known as "Death Stick guy." He wears a long trench coat, baggie khakis... why don't I just post it up.

Perhaps not the best example because it's very basic costume but I think that is kind of the idea. He's a drug dealer on Coruscant so that's what he wears.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about the Death Stick guy!  I picked up a bunch of the visual encyclopedias / dictionaries at the library yesterday to look through, but you're right, I think I might have to go back and rewatch the films on my laptop so I can get in close and screengrab and get better details.  I'd like to come up with some random smuggler/tech kind of character, kind of like a DJ from TLJ, or Bodhi Rook the pilot from Rogue One - and maybe a Jedi that's a combo of Jedi / robe-ish aesthetics without being the full Jedi regalia..  will have to see what I can find.

Thanks!

I really like this topic.  Not everyone is going to look like they belong to one of the four main factions.  As well, Jedi Sentinels supposedly have Jedi that their job is to blend in, so what does one wear to blend in and not stick out as Jedi (or Sith, or Imperial, or Rebel, et al)?

Thanks!  And you're exactly right - If we have an entire Galaxy far, far away of inhabited worlds, requiring a whole Republic / Senate, there's a whole lot of folks that aren't involved in what we see of the movies - sort of like the little boy at the and of TLJ on Canto Bight - who are all these people that Leia is trying to reach out to at the end of TLJ? Who are the regular people that join the rebellion? They all started somewhere, right?

Another great scene(s) to check out would be when Lando gives the gang a brief tour of Cloud City on the way to a dinner date with Vader. Cloud City isn't as much of a melting pot fashion-wise as depicted in the film but another great example of average people walking around.

In my mind, Cloud City was more like an oil rig, and everyone was wearing basically the work uniform.  Well, other than Lando, cause, ostentatious.

If anyone has scans/copies of old Star Wars Insider magazines, there's actually plenty of time dedicated to normal/minor characters though many of the just around pre episode 1 things. (I remember an article on the magazine that featured Mara Jade on the cover). It would seem, if you look at things like the clone wars, or the Post-Quils that are running now that the design aesthetic seems to be heavily variable. It seems almost like you can get away with most designs as long as you blend some eastern elements into an anglicized middle eastern costume. Seems to be where most people derive from.  I haven't seen my insider mags in years, I suspect they've been destroyed... by the empire. But if they turn up. I'll send what I can.

This whole sequence is pretty good for getting style ideas for what the average Coruscanti wears. It's a dark scene though so picking up the entire style or design of an entire costume is near impossible. It's probably worth noting that in many of these scenes the costuming department was trying to set an overall mood with the extras and their costumes so picking them out individually can... I guess ruin the overall effect because as in many Star Wars locales it all serves as a compliment to the location of the scene. Some of the outfits are a few notches past "outlandish" for obvious reasons.

Well it's nothing offical, but there are always more than a few people portraying 'normal' galactic Citizens at the starfire Cantina larp.
Sadly it seems their website is down, and the best source of images of the latest one I could find was this review of the con:
https://www.teilzeithelden.de/2017/05/14/conbericht-starfire-cantina-episode-iv/
hope that helps you guys find some inspiration.
