Points going wacko when trying to make an effect....very frustrating

i am using the mac version of the software. I will be going along trying to make an effect, adding points to change light intensity, then all of a sudden, the next point i add seems to appear way over on the left of the graph and it will not let me move it to where it shouid be, or even grab it at all. This is basically fatal to what I was trying to do. I have yet to be able to make an effect  because this keeps happening.

Anyone have this happen to them?

You added too many points to that effect.
