Anakin said it was to help his mother around the house... But that begs the bigger question: What kind of slaves have their own home (whether they own it or not) and seem to have free reign. from all outward appearances they did not seem like slaves. More like indentured servants or just very poor residents.
I know full well what was said. ⌐¿⌐ Why did it have to be a protocol droid. Why didn't he simply build a standard non-purpose-specific droid. "You, I suppose you're programmed for etiquette and protocol." - Owen Lars. Basically a protocol droid is tasked with making sure officials don't look the fool when dealing with customs of unfamiliar civilizations. Stuff like bow before the king, but don't break eye contact; when shaking the emir's hand, do not kiss above the second knuckle. And of course translating. I don't see the slave of a junk dealer having much use for a protocol droid. Oh well, I guess we made macaroni necklaces others build protocol droids. Still crap to give mom that she will never use.  |

Tell me about it. I want to see Thrawn played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Apparently I'm not the only one who likes these proposals. But I would get rid of the pupils.   Considering those were struck from canon, don't hold your breath

Droids don't learn, they are programmed. More than likely it's a software package. Like most of the crap Anakin built, his proximity to a junk yard gave him access to parts that just needed a little love. My question is "what is the point of a slave building a protocol droid?"
I was always curious about that too. We do see a protocol droid serving drinks at the beginning of TPM, but that would certainly fall under the whole "etiquette and relations" function that they are built for. Would have been interesting to see 3PO actually doing menial labor around the house. It almost looked like that's what he was doing when he meets Anakin in AOTC, but he was probably just flirting with that Treadwell droid...  |

I wish there was a halfway decent picture of a blue Lars Mikkelsen to compare between him and Cumberbatch, I couldn't find a good one. Lars would also be my immediate choice but his facial structure is still a bit different from the cartoon. I came across the rumor that supposedly they used the basis of Lars' face for the actual character but can't confirm it. Still, it looks a bit different. |
