Hello!

I'm still waiting for my first sabers to come to me (overseas shipping can take a long time...) but already think about future purchases and possible modifications. One of the projects I want to make is a very short, one-handed lightsaber like a Palpatine's one. For example, we can take an Initiate V4 and cut both ends of the central part of the hilt to make it really short:

(Sorry for bad photoshop work Sad )

Of course, it will be necessary to add a really big pommel to work as a counterweight and to support palm during cuts, but it seems doable. Maybe it is even possible to order this kind of custom short hilt from the US?

I understand that it may be not enough space left for a soundboard and such but all I need is just a stunt saber to do some fencing.

What do you think about the idea? Is it viable or totally stupid from your POV?

I don’t know if it’s doable, but i like the idea!! If it’s just an led, switch assembly and battery pack(not a full chassis for a sound assembly) I don’t see why you couldn’t work it out.

It's doable but I wouldn't know how it would work other than for cosplay use.  Cutting the ends may throw off it's balance

I put the flamberge's tiny ring emitter and the almost nonexistant menace pommel on the body of an archon and made basically the body section as a fully working saber.  I can't find the pictures of it but I posted them here forever ago.

It definitely can, but I plan to:
1. Install some lead weights into the hilt and pommel.
2. Use a shorter blade.

Or at least I can use it as a Viking sword to deliver strong cuts Smiley.

Ou! It's a nice idea Smiley. Thanks for sharing.

You need to take a look at TCSS (The Custom Saber Shop) which we can talk about here. We'll be much easier designing with an their MHS parts, and you can still use emitters and pommels from here with them. Or even look under build your own at US. You can order parts instead of whole sabers. Ordering parts including the body will be better then trying to cut stuff down etc.. You cab get freaky short body parts from TCSS.

Hi if you want a shorter saber without sound for fencing then the Initiate v2 may be what you want without needing to cut the body down.  However it is not MHS compatible as it has a more narrow diameter of 1.25 cm compared to most of the other sabers at 1.45 cm.  The plus is that the blade goes deeply into the emitter and there are x2 retention screws.  Here's some photos so that you can see the differences.  Will check what I already have in my imgur saber pics.  Master Nero Attaru is our fencing specialist and he uses a variety of sabers including the v2's and Prophecy.  Smiley

Thank you for advice, but it is not exactly what I'm looking for. All that sabers are more of "hand-and-a-half" types while I want to have a truly one-handed thing, preferably with a balance and handling properties of a sidesword or a rapier (I mean 17-th century rapier, not a modern Olimpic foil).

Oh, holy bloody s**t! That is the place I was looking for! Many thanks! And their MHS builder is perfect as well. I can do something like this:

with less than 9-inch total length and 4-inch (!) grip.

The only difficulty will be with fitting electronics and AV-switch in such a tight space, but it is just an engineering problem.

Thank you again! Smiley

Interesting.  Are you going to drill a hole for the switch?

It seems the only possible place for a switch will be in a pommel, right in the butt-end. But I can always pretend that it is one of those Force-activated lightsabers of the past Smiley.

Oh, wait... If only I had good enough engineering skills it could be possible to have a hidden magnet-activated switch and I could stitch big neodymium magnet (I have a lot of them for magnetizing tabletop models) into my glove to give an impression of a Force-activated lightsaber. Just hold it in the right way and it turns on...

I need to find someone able to do this sort of crazy stuff Smiley.

Sounds like a really great idea, I'm interesting to see if it's possible to make it work in that manner.  Cause for great cosplay

Button switches are only a small part of the electrical industry. Micro switches, momentary, roller, magnetic, reversible rocker, etc. AV and momentary switches are commonly used because they can be standardized in a blueprint and purchased in bulk. This is why most saber crafters use them, but options are available, if you think outside of the box.

The only problem is that I do not have enough skills to do it myself. Probably I should look for someone taking commissions...

The biggest hurdle I can see with this is getting the LED unit into the hilt. It's going to be butted up right against the switch, and will stick up into the vented area. (unless you get it without vents) Of  course, practical use with a blade would be mostly out, but it's a pretty nifty idea for cosplay purposes.
