Been training with the longblade this week. Trying to get more proficient from a distance. My tendency is to stay close, as I am stubby, and that’s how I fight with the open hand. Thank you master. It’s been a struggle for many years not to be compelled to bring the fight in close to my opponent. I have been beaten in the street and in competition by guys who are taller (longer). To compensate for not being able to fight well against opponents, who are long, from a distance, I typically take the fight to them, which has proved quite successful. That being said, when I received the 40” blade in a grab bag I was excited to have a tool to attempt to hone this skill. Short story long, I will be posting vids to show my progress, please continue to give me criticism.

Looking good Gum. I like the the lighting of your shot. I am not a master, but if we were training together I would point out that your posture is pitched forward. Again, this is probably a habit from dealing with longer opponents but that lean throws off balance and slows footwork. I would recommend a more balanced, shoulders aligned with hips posture and extending your arms as Master S suggested. I believe you will find that using footwork and blade positioning to control combat distance will serve you much better than leaning in/pitching forward. My only other offering may be to change your camera angle so that masters can get a look at your footwork. I think most will agree that footwork is the key to striking.

No, thank you musashi. As this was supposed to be a vid to help improvement, I should have left the lights on, but I love to show off my flash!!! But, good points. Will be working this week, hopefully, starting tonight. So, we’ll see how much improvement can be made after a few days of focus!

Looking good Gumby, I personally haven't been able to work with a 40" yet, but I think that you did quite well for your first (i think) attempt with it. The only thing I actually noticed is what the others have mentioned about you leaning forwards a bit too much. other than that I think you had really nice technique and flow. have a point friend!

Thanks bra! I trained in kenjitsu for several years when I was in my late teens and early twenties. I also had a teacher from Laos/Vietnam who taught me some basic skills with a thin, straight, double edged blade. Lots of general slicing and chopping goes on at my house, and pretty much always has. Sabers are just way more fun than my bokken!!!!
