Actually, there are standards to a degree. All PCs have USB ports standard for 25 years now. The power supply are proprietary to their brand alone which makes sense business wise. Take cell phones for example, their chargers had no standard until the mid 2000s when most Android decides went to mini USB, then micro USB and now, USB-C. Apple had their old apple charger until The Lightning charger came out years ago.
Yes, computers didn’t have a standard to begin with but then, the industry changed and they went from not Having one and then in the 90s, standards like ACPI, AHCI, Energy star, ATX, BIOS, Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE, ATA/ATAPI, PATA), Bluetooth and USB
Let’s tjae the flash drive for example. We started out with large floppy disks that started out as 8 inch, then 5.25, and finally 3.5 until CDs came out. There’s also the Zip drive that was short lived. That went on until DVDs and then BluRay but by then, solid state technology was already in its infancy in the form of flash drives thanks to Apple’s iPod tech. Computers went through all of those technologies and yes they were standards of their times speaking of solid states, look at hard drives, we we t from mere megs to, GB, and now we’re in terabytes and from actual moving disks to solid state drives now.
Computer changed from ports and connections aren’t that it wasn’t standard, it’s the evolution of these connections and ports. You just listed from the 9-pin which wasn’t efficient for that time period. Each generation of ports are more reliable, more efficient, and much faster than the last. That’s the way with USB, USB 2 was used widely until 3.0 came out but now USB-C is four times faster and it’s pretty the standard. Now, most companies are much slower to follow standards but you shouldn’t blame the lack of stabdarda in an industry when the manufacture doesn’t follow suit or is slow to change. The industry is forever changing and manufacturers follow standards to keep up. Think about it, do you want to pay modern pricing for 20 year old technology let alone 5 year technology? I wouldn’t, technology evolves faster than man can buy or think. That’s the nature of it
Same thing with cell phones. When they first came out, all manufacturers had their own chargers and ports that was native to their phones alone. Then mini USB hit the market for non iPhones and the entire industry Minus a few brands went that route followed by the micro USB that dominated the Android market until it evolved to the USB-C. Speaking which, there’s only two major OSs for cell phones now, iPhone or Android but before there was Windows and BlackBerry in the market but they were popular and was killed off although in recent years, the Blackberry has made a return.
My pint is that there are thousands if not millions of standards, most you won’t know or can’t tell u til you’re in the tech field or are just into it.
