The Mighty, Mighty GUM

« on: December 24, 2018, 02:17:51 AM »

Anyone who saw my Dark Initate v5 different claw flip thread will recognize how this started.

A quick pop off of the claws, and then a flip up and pinning using the upper hole in the emitter in an almost, what some others have coined, war glaive fashion, gave a sweet spikey appearance, with a lot more aggressive feel. The downfall was the claws were totally unsupported, and would certainly pop right off with any real force. A ring of some type seemed logical to fasten the prongs to, and provide an interesting aesthetic. Try as I might, finding the proper diameter piece of stainless, or aluminum, was rather difficult on a holiday weekend, with such short notice. Being completely OCD I couldn’t let it go and ventured over to the hardware store. After killing around considering my available choices, copper pipe seemed the best option. I always liked the tone matching of copper and black, and as the hilt is a Dark Initate fit perfectly to the scheme. After a slice with my chop saw, a bit of level sanding, an evening of the finish, and drilling out the holes, she mocked up quickly, was modified, and set for final afixing.

After about four hours of cure time, the overflowed epoxy was cleaned off, and what remained was this...

Reminds me of the towers in LotR.
Excellent work there

Whoa! Genius move with the copper ring, Gumby!  I also agree with Therion that it looks like the tower from LOTR

Looks fantastic. Better than I thought it would. Have you given thoughts about how to cover over the grooves where the claws originally rested? I know you were saying they had sharp edges and could cause problems if you were gripping/spinning the hilt at that point.

How about cutting small squared pieces and overlaying them over the holes so that they can match the ring and give added color to the saber

That’s actually a great idea! I’m not sure I could square them up enough to make it look clean, but it’s still a good idea.

holy cow this looks sweet. I have an Aeon V5 and right now a Dominix V5 is on its way for my "Dark Negotiator" (silver side has a consular green blade and the black side will have an emerald green blade, I'll be adding some kind of grip wrapping to it as well) saber staff. I think I'll copy this with some stainless tubing.

gumby, that looks great!   I agree, a patch over the lower holes would help, and link the ring to the rest of the saber, but that's a tweak.  Overall this is EXCELLENT!   Well done!

I’m pleasantly surprised to see you guys commenting on this thread! Thanks for all the comments. I’ve had zero personal time lately( in fact, I’ve been on the road for weeks now ), so there has been no work on this saber at all. Still trying to figure out how to cleanly cover the sharp edges. If I can it will make an incredible spinner!! The balance point is moved just a bit forward, to a point where it naturally wants to come around cleanly with ease. I love form and function!!!!
