... with my Initiate saber. I bought it for my son for xmas. It's the regualr Initate which US seems to have quit making in the month since I ordered it (order placed 11/19). It worked great at first. However, now the blade LED color, which is Sun Rider's Destiny, seems to wimp out and turn to plain green after the saber has been on for a few minutes. I wondered if this was a battery problem, since I have no idea of the battery life of these things. However, we cannot figure out how to replace the batteries. The newer Initiates seem to have a pommel that unscrews, but I can't unscrew anything on this.

Can anyone help?

SRD will shift to green when the batteries get low.  Sounds like the batteries need to be replaced.  Here are instructions for replacing the batteries in our old hilts with plugs:

If the saber doesn't have a plug, but instead has a rubbery pommel, then you can just slide the pommel off and get to the batteries that way.
