Tatooine

The heat radiated from every surface of Mos Espa, the twin stars that the planet orbited worked together to bake the surface of the planet. Sand and dust was everywhere, it clung to every wall and coated every window, the air was thick with it. Sand and heat were the two defining characteristics of Tatooine, they were everywhere. The only power that came close to matching the sand and the heat were the Hutts. The Hutts’ influence was felt inside every building in Tatooine and lurked in every shadow. While the Empire and the Republic were fighting for control of the galaxy, the Hutts owned Tatooine, and Tatooine provide litter reason for anyone to dispute the Hutts claim, until recently.

A few months ago Imperial weapons and slave shipments started to be interrupted with increasing frequency, Imperial Intelligence believes the organization that is responsible for this interruption is base in the deep deserts of Tatooine. In the same time period the Republic has lost several aid shipments that were on their way to distant plants in the system, their intelligence reports also point to an operation based on Tatooine. The Hutts have heard similar reports of some sort of new organization that has set up their base of operations and while they do not fear the Republic or the Empire they see no benefit to an open conflict.

That is how the dawn finds Mos Espa, already hot with a slight breeze moving the dust slowly through its streets, with agents of the Empire and the Republic along with freelancers hired by the Hutts converging on its spaceport looking for information and with the direction to put aside normal grievances and work together.

::Talon Gim:: Mandalorian Mercenary::
::Tatooine::

Talon hated the desert, with a passion. Stepping out of the Imperial shuttle that had carried him down to the planet, he cursed as the sun hammered down on his armored shoulders and head. The fact that his undersuit compensated for the new temperatures before he could properly feel it only made him more irritable. His visor polarized dark, shielding him from the harsh suns. Walking out of the shuttle pad, he checked his weapons, the heavy beskad at his hip and the oddly bulky gauntlets on his hands. Resting his left hand on the hilt of his beskad saber, he took out his datapad and checked the address that his Imperial contact had given him. He knew that other assets, from the Empire and Republic both, were in the city. In his estimation, many were likely to be heavier implements. He was as capable of being full-frontal as any other Mando, but with the opponents he preferred to challenge, he often found stealth preferable.

Double checking his datapad, he grunted and returned it to his pouch, giving a hard stare to a pickpocket who was looking at him with too much interest and too little sense. When the urchin retreated, Talon started walking again, he had a contact to meet.

:: Shriah Tharn, Human Mercenary
Tattooine::

Shriah stepped out of an alley and into the direct sunlight. She pulled up the collar of her rust-brown leather greatcoat. She crossed the street toward Talon, her armored legs carrying her purposefully. She stopped at one of the street vendor's stalls and seemed to browse the man's wares. Occasionally, an armored hand would pick up something for closer examination but the other never wavered far from the blasters holstered on her hips.

She mentally noted the Mandalorians presence but paid him little mind. She currently had not quarrels with them, but given the nature of her current contract she could not help but wonder if this man would become a rival. As she finished browsing she gave the merchant a slight bow and once again moved toward the Mandalorian.

::Darth Sallow, Human Sith Lord::
::Tatooine::

Darth Sallow sighed as he felt the ship begin to descend towards Tatooine he was not overly fond of these types of missions he had always preferred straight up fights against Jedi, or at least Republic troops; hunting down a few want to be rebels and terrorists wasn’t the best use of his abilities. Slowly getting off the bed he moved to his wardrobe and started dressing for the mission his black pants and tunic hung on his gaunt frame, his tabards came down almost to his knees, they use to stop at his mid thigh but he had used to be bulkier back in the day.

Back when there were front lines to fight on and real battles to fight, Sallow thought to himself as he fastened the slender hilt of his light saber to his belt and pulled on his cloak. He stared at his reflection in the mirror his cheek bones were prominent and his yellowing skin was pulled taunt across his jaw. He rolled his shoulder for a moment and then pulled his hood up over his head and made his way through the ship.

As he stepped off the ramp he squinted as his eyes adjusted to the change in the light. Even on the landing pad he could feel the heat of the planet and the dust in the air, it was going to be a long mission. He picked his way quickly through the spaceport, though he had moved quicker before he had injured his leg in the sacking of Coruscant. Most people wouldn’t notice his slight limp but Sallow felt it with every step, felt how out of touch with the force he had become.

Stepping out onto the streets of Mos Espa Sallow shook his head and forced a smile, for all his complaining about the assignment he was happy to have been entrusted with a mission again.

:: Coryn Nabor, Jedi Apprentice ::
:: Tatooine ::

Coryn shuttered as his ship landed on the harsh desert planet, and it wasn’t because of the rough landing. He had hoped that he would be able to forever block out that section of his childhood, but unfortunately, it stayed with him constantly. Now, being back in Hutt Space brought the memories back to the forefront of his mind.

As the young Jedi moved down the ramp off the ship, he was hit by the blast of hot, desert air. He didn’t mind. As much as he hated to admit it, he still felt at home in the heat. The Nikto were from a desert planet to begin with, and he had, unfortunately, been born on Nal Hutta. Not his favorite memories by any stretch of the imagination. Still, he had a job to do, and as such would be sure to complete it. He just hoped he wouldn’t have too many run-ins with the Hutts while he was here.

Mos Espa was a large city, and a hub for all things vile, though not quite a bad as Mos Eisley. He had never been to the city, but had done a fair amount of research on the trip from Coruscant. Now he hoped he could blend in, and avoid confrontation. There was a dark presence nearby, he could feel it. He wished Master Komyute was here with him, but he knew that the council had not been able to pull him from his deep cover mission. Still, it would have been comforting to know that there was someone with him who knew of his past and could help him make wise decisions.

::Talon Gim:: Mandalorian Mercenary::
::Tatooine::

He'd spotted the woman as soon as she started moving towards him. Long experience in spotting potential trouble that was supplemented by his helmet computer's algorithms that flagged the armored limbs and the likely weapons she was wearing. She didn't match any of the profiles on his datapad, but that didn't necessarily mean anything. If she wasn't working for the Empire, she was working for the Republic, something told him she wasn't with the Hutts. Normally, her being a Republic agent, if that's what she was, would result in him either luring her into a trap and killing her or losing her in the city streets, before tracking her down and eliminating her. Normally, this time around however, he had orders to play nice. No killing unless provoked.

While his hand didn't exactly go to his beskad's hilt, his hands flexed reflexively as the woman came closer. As the distance closed to what he could comfortably cross in a couple fast paces, he chinned the controls for his helmet speaker. "You looking for me?"

:: Shriah Tharn, Human Mercenary ::
:: Tattooine ::

Shriah had stopped at another merchant stand, this time not far from the Mandalorian. She noticed the man flex his hands, obviously expecting some form of trouble from her. When the mans spoke her hand froze. She was not touching the blaster on her left hip, but her hand was in a position where she could draw and fire the weapon at a moment's notice. Shriah could not be sure what the Mando was here for but she guessed it might will be for the same reason she was.

She relaxed her hand, picked up a small trinket, and dropped a pair of coins on the merchants table before turning to face the Mandalorian.

"No, I doubt it." she said flatly, "Although it is hard to tell through all that armor. I do suspect you and I may be here for the same reason, though."

::Barl, Coynite, Mercenary::
::Czerka Office,Mos Espa, Tatooine::

Barl stepped out of the office atrium and back into the covered compound area that adjoined the main thoroughfare. The cool air of the climate control abruptly cut off as the heavy door slid closed behind him, being swiftly replaced by the hot dry heat of the desert planet.

The Coynite had been on Tatoonine almost for almost 48 hours and had now finally received his instructions. He paused for a moment considering the implications of his newly received mission. Czerka Corporation officially had only a small presence on Tatooine, apparently there had been previous operations around mining and weapons development that had failed. Yet two shipments of unspecified equipment had disappeared and a hidden location in the desert was the suspected base for whoever had taken them.

Czerka expecting that it was likely a case of piracy had sent out a small scouting force, made up of their local personnel and some security droids but contact had been lost almost straight away. Suspecting pirate spies within Mos Espa Czerka had contacted the Coynite Mercenary Guild to send someone who would not be known on Tatooine and who could work independently.
Barl was one of the few Coynites available who had passed through the Advanced Arid Biosphere Combat Course at the Mercenary Guild training centre on Dega, and as such he had been dispatched to Tatooine on the first available transport.

As it turned out Barl had arrived before the orders from Czerka had reached their local office but he had not wasted his time. He had equipped himself with clothes and equipment suitable for the desert, a thin, sandy coloured hooded robe to where over his armour, a breath mask with a decent filter and a function that cooled the air as it was taken in and a pair of dark tinted googles that cut down the glare and kept the sand and dust out of the Coynites eyes.

He had scouted around town and walked into the surrounding desert at sunset where he had killed a number of large rodents that had attacked him and now he finally had his orders. To find out what had happened to the Czerka scout team and if possible complete their mission. Barl had left some of his equipment such as his long straight Sat’skar sword and cool climate clothes in a lockbox in the Czeka office and he had been given a payment card and address where he could pick up a speeder for use on his mission.

The big Coynite put on the goggles and breathmask and ducked under the entrance of the Czerka compound and walked into the street. He pushed past some Jawas that tried to sell him trinkets and a Gotal that stepped in his way and to sell him some fruit. The Gotal addressed him in passable Shyriiwook, a number of Aliens had mistaken Barl for a Wookie on this planet presumably because of his hooded robe, size and the fact he carried a bowcaster. Ignoring the Gotal Barl turned the corner into the next street. There by the nearest market-stall not 10 meters away a Human female and a Mandalorian in full armour stood. The female seemed to be dressed as a merc and while Baral could not make out what the two were saying the situation was evidently tense as both were standing in postures that would enable weapons to be drawn fast. In Coynite culture a weapon would not be drawn unless it was going to be used, even when cleaning his D’skar dagger Barl would administer a ritual cut upon himself to make sure the blade was honoured with blood before returning to its scabbard. The Coynite stopped and watched the interaction with the professional interest of a mercenary.

::Darth Sallow, Human Sith Lord::
::Mos Espa, Tatooine::

It was early in the day but the streets of Mos Espa were already starting to fill, the fact that this many people would come to this city, or even this planet always amazed Sallow, he wasn’t a fan of the desert but he had grown to except it, his years teaching on Korriban had helped him adjust to the dust and the heat. No it wasn’t the climate that made Tatooine so desolate it was its lack of wealth and lack of worth, on most days there was simply no reason to ever come to Tatooine, it didn’t have many resources it didn’t have a storied history all it had was sand, poverty and corruption. Taking a quick look around

Sallow smirked, it was the corruption that had brought most of these people here, people looking for a quick and easy credit that they didn’t have the ability to lawfully earn in the Empire, or even the Republic for that matter.

Knowing better than to expose himself to more heat than necessary Sallow headed down the dirt street towards his destination, he spotted the usual array of smugglers, peasants, mercenaries and even one person at least trying to pass as a Mandolorian, whoever it was at least carried itself like one.

He stepped off the street and into the shade of a doorway of a rundown building. The sign above the door translated roughly to “Drink”, he was supposed to be meeting the rest of the rag tag coalition his superiors had told him about. It was a sad state of affairs that the Empire had to work with the Republic and independents to solve this problem. Back in the war when the Empire was strong they wouldn’t ask or accept assistance they would simply do what needed to be done and will the force to solve their problems but now here he was watching what may develop into a street fight in a market across the street, the Mandalorian and a human were testing each other and there was a Coynite there as well Sallow wondered how he had missed that big beast before.

::Mos Espa, Tatooine::

"Not impossible, no." Talon frowned, narrowing his eyes behind the opaque material of his visor. For an individual who wasn't a Mandalorian, this woman looked like she could hold her own. The implicit understanding in his mind was, of course, that until she proved herself, she wasn't an equal, either. With a grunt, he relaxed as  much as his people ever did in any space outside of their dome cities. Backing off from ready-to-fight to watching-ready-to-move.

"Best get yourself moving, then." Potential ally or not, there was no way in hell he was letting an unknown maybe-enemy walk behind him. As he turned slightly, he spotted the Coynite and grunted. He'd fought a couple of their kind before, tough opponents and worthy of respect. There was enough distance between himself and this one that he felt comfortable turning his back. Orienting himself on where his datapad had directed him to go, he saw a cloaked and hooded figure standing at the opening to the bar, the cowl pointed in his direction. A chill didn't exactly run down his back, but instinct honed through years of training and more of battlefield experience pointed to a force user being on the field, either a member of the hated Jetii or the thinly-tolerated Dar'Jetii. Grimacing, he started towards the figure.

"After you." Shriah said as she spotted first the Coynite then the one she thought might be a Sith, judging by his dark robes. The Coynite intrigued her more. She had only seen one once before and part of her felt a little bad for the man the hulking brute had pummeled to death. Her mentor and former partner, Deacon had told her of several encounters he had with them.

Giving a mischievous grin, Shriah deliberately moved passed the Mandalorian and the Coynite and nearer toward the young Nikto.

"You lost?" she teased.

::Barl, Coynite, Mercenary::
::Mos Espa,Tatooine::

Barl breifly watched as the interaction between the Human female and the Mandalorian but it seemed it would not end in a fight. Unexpectedly an irritating beep from his commlink alerted him that Czerka were calling already. The Coynite turned towards a nearby wall to get some privacy for his conversation and flicked the commlink on. He was immediately addressed by the Czerka protocol droid from the office he had just left.

“Czerka contractor 22198497206S you are directed to report to the location indicated at the end of this communication. You will meet operatives from other agencies there who are undertaking tasks parallel to your own. You will co-operate with these agents and secure any Czerka assets uncovered in the course of your task. It is assumed you understand and will comply with these instructions. The location co-ordinates are as follows......”

Barl snapped the commlink off as soon as the long and complicated planetary co-ordinates had been read out. If the droid had been present, he would have just as quickly snapped its arms off. Czerka! Why the guild took jobs for them Barl didn’t know, they had credits but no honour or respect and from what he had seen on other planets probably less integrity than the Hutts.

The Coynite realised the co-ordinates of the location he was expected to meet the other agents was literally across the street and literally around the corner from the Czerka office. With an Angry growl he turned in the direction of the doorway of a shabby building located there, a crude sign hung above the uninviting enterance. The Mandalorian was heading in the same direction and in the doorway stood another Human, a male, that almost seemed to radiate a strange, ominous, cold sensation that prickled the Coynites skin despite the heat of the twin suns overhead.

Sallow ducked into the bar and headed down the stairs, the establishment was dark and much cooler than it was outside. Sallow slowly made his way to the bar as his eyes adjusted to light; he made a quick scan of the bottles behind the bar. It was early just an hour after sunrise but the establishment was already a quarter full.

“Bourbon,” Sallow said as he stood in front of the bar, and put several credits on the counter top, “and one round for each of my companions.”

Sallow looked around the room and head towards a large table in the far corner, taking the seat farthest from the door.

:: Coryn Nabor, Jedi Apprentice ::
:: Tatooine, Mos Espa ::
Before disembarking from his ship, Coryn had changed out of his Jedi fatigues into a more casual clothing. It would keep him from standing out too much. He kept his armor on, most people in the galaxy wore armor so that wouldn’t make him stand out. Still, he wore a large cloak to hopefully keep his nature hidden a bit. His lightsaber was also hidden, though he didn’t think many people would think of it as anything more than a metal cylinder. Even with the simplicity of the hilt, he had learned that it was best to be cautious and avoid attention on planets not controlled by the Republic.

Though still “technically” a padawan in rank, Coryn had now done quite a few quests on his own, and had issues not arisen with the scheduling, he would have completed his Trails by now. In order for his mission to succeed however, it was still important to remain unnoticed and unrecognized seeing as he did not know exactly what he was supposed to do.

As he walked through the streets of Mos Espa, he tried to be as observant as possible with both his physical and mental abilities. He had to be careful of reaching out too much with the Force however. The possibility of running into someone who wielded the Force against the Republic was extremely high in a hub city like this. He entered into what seemed to be some sort of market or something, and froze. There were quite a few people around, but something was off. The Force felt wrong here. Or maybe not the Force, but someone using it. He looked around and noticed a few specific people, a Mandalorian and a female mercenary were talking over by a booth, and then there was a big creature in a robe, probably a wookiee, near another one. However, he didn’t see anything that seemed unusual. The confusion must have been evident in his face, because the next thing he noticed was the mercenary walking towards him and talking to him.

“You lost?” She asked with a bit of an attitude.

“No. Just trying to find something. It is supposed to be in this area.” Coryn replied honestly. “Maybe you can help me out.” He said trying to act friendly, and maybe get her off his back. “I’m looking for . . .  some sort of . . . uh . . . meeting place or something. I think it’s called the ‘Drink’ or something like that. Odd place for a meeting, but then again, this is an odd place.”

He followed the dark cloaked figure who he was becoming more convinced was a member of the Dar'Jetii down into the bar, keeping a watchful eye on the hooded figure and the female mercenary he'd been watching before. As far as the Coynite, he trusted his helmet's integral systems to warn him if it rushed his back.

Inside, the bar was comfortably cooler than the street outside, dark and busy. Talon considered activating his helmet's low-light settings but decided against it, navigating through the space to join the hooded figure at the table it had chosen. He didn't speak, simply nodded to the figure and took the seat at the Dar'Jetii's right hand, a silent statement that the rest of those who would be gathering here could interpret however they wished.
