Hey guys, I'm asking what is probably a very basic question... building my own saber. Going to be a stunt, not interested in sound (my son has autism, will hate the noise, wife will complain, and more work than I'm willing..)

So I know mostly what I'm doing here. Two standard AAA batteries, latching switch, red LED and module... my question is, do I need a resistor with this set up? If so, what kind and where will it go?

Also, the hilt I'm using is from.. somewhere else. Not obviously from the other guys, but clearly not an ultrasaber (for those who dont know, I have owned a few ultrasabers).
Am I allowed to post a build thread on it on this forum? If so, where?  I'm sure there was a build thread on here last time I was here, but I cant find it now...

Please and thank you!

This is the wiring that you need

If you're using US' LED, you can contact them to ask what resistor you need.

If you're using a different one, I'll need the following info for that LED chip which should come with the LED or you can contact the seller/manufacturer:

Source voltage: if you're using standard AAAs then it's 3.0V because you're using two
Diode Forward Voltage:
Diode Forward current (mA):

Keep in mind that two AAAs will work but they won't last as long as the standard AAA setup which has 4

@Inf01: Corrected a few things Wink

Apart from that, Inf01 gave you all the info (!) that you need Cheesy

Thanks for that! the forward voltage is 2.5v. And I intend on only using 2 AAA batteries if possible.

Clarify: 3 volts batteries, 1amp LED with forward voltage of 2.5 volts = 0.5 resistor. Is this correct?
Would a 1 ohm resistor work or would I blow the LED?

Please understand, I cannot work this out no matter how hard i try, i will never be able to understand ohms law,its too complicated for my tiny little mind.

And please dont try to explain it, i really will not understand...

I would really appreciate it if someone could just hand me the answer i need. Sorry if I'm being a pain in the rancor...

http://led.linear1.org/1led.wiz

You need the source voltage (3v, apparently) and the forward voltage and current of your LED. Enter the values, and the calculator gives you the correct resistor Wink

Edit: A 1 ohm 1W resistor should be okay according to the website. The voltage is 2.5v and red normally has forward current of 700 mA (not 1000).

Brilliant, thank you. I really dont get why I can not understand ohms law, everyone else seems to understand it just fine! Oh well, I have skills in other places. Woodwork, mostly...

That's why they have resistors calculaters online LOL. That's what I use Smiley

Yeah, very useful Cheesy I know the standard equation (R = U / I), but can't get it to work for LEDs either Cheesy Seems that it must be modified in order to work...

Back with other irritating questions, sorry..

Thinking of popping 4 AAA batteries in there now, as I'm now putting a rumble motor in with it too.
LED is 2.5v and runs on 1amp. What resistor do I need now? 3ohm?
Also the rumble motor works fine with 2 AAA without resistors perfectly well, do I need a 3ohm resistor here too as I'm now using 4AAA?
Also want to run both on the same circuit, how do I wire this up to maximum effect?
I'll dole out points for this for helpful answers, promise!

Thanks.

The wizard says 3.9 ohm 3.9 W for the LED, however I'm not sure if the red really runs on 1000mA. I always thought it's 700mA (then it's a 5.6 ohm 2.7 W). Do you have the LED type or a link to the LED with the actual specs? Just want to be sure, I don't want to be the one to blame if you blow your LED module because of a wrong resistor Tongue

As for the rumble...I have no idea Undecided It should have a working range like almost all types of electronical components, maybe it can run on 4 AAA as well without a resistor.
