Wonderful Okinawa and a pump with the 31st MEU on the USS Essex with stops in Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Singapore. |

Interesting. I can't give many details, but I fought in Chechnya, so nothing overseas (from Russia). |

I got into a few brawls, no gunfights, plus I got friends that came home in a box from the things they did. You might say that it keeps me humble.
Luckily, the few people I know who went over seas all came back in air crafts, not boxes. |

Some of the people I trained with came back in boxes from the same operations I was in, sometimes even because they were giving me cover or making sure that I wasn't compromised. Nothing makes one appreciate life as much as death, and nothing is as humbling as seeing someone lay down their life for their homeland.

Not to break the religion and politics rule, but this reminds me of a bible verse I read recently. Something to the effect that there is no greater love than that of a man who lays down his life for a friend. Humbling to think of, even for this civilian.

I'd say quite a bit. Footwork, judging distance, etc. Master Nero or MAV will probably give a better answer. lol |

You might say I am biased as my main swordsmanship experience comes from about 10 years of competitive fencing, but I say it is very useful. As Kham said, the main ideas of combat are there - footwork, distance, timing, etc. As long as you can learn to adapt to the inclusion of cutting attacks (probably easier for a sabrist) you can use fencing training quite effectively. I do anyway  |

I was a sabre fencer for a while, but I got tired of all the rules. I was too young for any of the training to really stick with me, though. One thing I have observed is that fencing training is only helpful when both parties are at least marginally following the rules. In real-life sword combat, in which both parties are trying to annihilate each other, I think its effectiveness would be greatly diminished.
