Is there some special trick to adding an avatar by url?

I've tried about a dozen different images and it keeps not working? i.e. certain number of posts required, pic size restrictions, ect?

I use imgur.
Then try to copy-paste the entire URL into the "I have my own picture"-thingie and remove the s from https://
