May The Force Serve You Well

« on: April 27, 2020, 12:01:20 AM »

For a cosplay my son and I are still hoping to use at Celebration, or possibly FanX this year, I started work on what is arguably the most difficult part of an Mandalorian-style bounty hunter: the helmets.

I apologize for not posing the pics, but the video really tells the story

Nice video, Therion. I always enjoy your customizing videos and this one's no exception. The attention to detail is always enjoyable

Thank you, Infinit01
They're still very much a WIP, but they're coming along very nicely

This is just incredible, TJ!  Laboriously constructed yet easy to follow...Infinit01 is right: your attention to detail is remarkable  Smiley

Oh, and I love spying all of the goodies in the background that you have in your shop  Cheesy

Great job!  Point!

I love the vents on the back of the helmet, makes it like the real deal. From someone who's worn a lot of helmets for different things, I always make sure I get ones with vents

Thanks, guys.
Now, admittedly, the vents on the backs of the two helmets are purely for show, and non-functional.

I'll have an update later on

Of course, I wouldn't thought it was real even though that would of been cool.

incredible work as always!

Questions from a novice:

What kind of heat gun do you recommend for shaping EVA? I'm looking for something as cheap but effective as possible.

What foam do you like using?

I'm looking at creating a pair of vembraces starting from this pattern and minus the fins (https://www.thefoamcave.com/product/template-for-batman-gauntlets/) and some shoulder armor from this picture (there's no way I'm pulling off the rest of the outfit :-D ). I'm struggling with figuring out how to make a pattern for the armor for that but I think it would start out as a circle that is flattened like a taco shell? (mmm tacos)

Anyhoo...good work...and your son is super lucky...

All right

The heat gun I use is one I picked up off of Amazon: It's a Wen 2000. And has two heat settings

Recently, I've been using HD EVA foam from Blik. It was recommended by Odin Abbott of the OdinMakes channel
The two thicknesses I mainly use are 10mm and 6mm
I've also used 1/2" floor mats from Home Depot

You may be able to find some templates via YouTube or other places.
Those Batman Gauntlets look pretty good, based on the pics

Yeah, he's lucked out.
He's also the one who suggested the Mando kits in the first place

And thanks for that link.
I found a couple of useful things there for my own use

Thanks again for the suggestions.

The foam cage stuff is nice and I'm thinking of re-doing my jedi belt pouches by modding the free batman belt pouches to suit.

And, without further ado:

An update on the helmets
