Yes, it happens with the non-anodized sabers, i.e. not Dark, Crimson, Azure, etc. See here: http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=44839.0  Ultra explains it in his post.

Well, that's interesting....would wearing gloves help prevent that from happening?  Or at least slow it down?

I’m going to say no... it’ll just put the aluminum oxide on the gloves rather than your hands.

I just leather wrapped the hilt... problem solved.
other option is making off any greebles (buttons, charge ports, etc.) and spray it down with a clear coat of some type.

If you don't want dirty hands, some gloves will spare them. I use simple white cloth work gloves that have the little rubber dots on them. Work gloves tend to fit loosely, so I use a size smaller than normal so they fit tight. The gloves themselves will turn black over time, which I like. It reminds me of the myth of the origin of black belts in martial arts.
