Hi all, really need to do some SERIOUS saber maintenance after a duel and a few drinks, and well, while I won the duel, my saber took some damage
the button has gotten sticky, and after some tinkering, I got the button to click back out

I thought "okay, I got this. Let's stick in the batteries and give it a go"
but nada
and then I smelt it, smoke. I'm gonna get some isopropyl tomorrow and not gonna power it up until then
I did get light, but it feels so risky

the battle was legendary what can I say, I'm now the Jedi of Glasney  Cool

UPDATE: I'm pretty sure the resistor was shorting on something, it might have gotten too hot and made contact with something it shouldn't have. How do I take my switch out? I can't really do proper inspection otherwise

If it's a guarded switch (https://ultrasabers.com/product/guarded-latching-switch/) then it's press fit.
You should be able to pull it out by using your fingers, or some pliers. Just be careful not to scratch the hilt. Sometimes the guarded switch is secured in with a dab of (hot)glue, so using a painttripper or hairdryer to liquify the glue a bit, may help.
You should have little problem pulling it out.

If it's an AV switch, then it's screwed in.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hope this helps.

I am using the Guarded switch, but just learnt that the black guard ring seems to have broken off the switch assembly, I think I might be able to glue it but it's a temp fix for a bigger problem.
Looking like im gonna have to get a new one, the only issue is now that I can't get the switch assembly to stay in, it just pushes back through. I've just moved to uni so my toolbox is like 400 miles away  Cry

I think I had something similar. This was my temporarily fix:

Not great, but I managed until the parts arrived and I was brave enough to start soldering and taking the saber apart.

And then I went for the upgrade Firehand suggested:

Ty for your reply! I've managed to glue the piece back on, but again like the fix you did it's very temporary. Can you link me the AV swtich you used? It'll be a while before I can install it as my makeshift solder station is at home, but if I have it ready I can install it when I head back for christmas break

That switch he used is a 12mm AV switch from TCSS. It is momentary and will need a momentary to latching converter to work in a stunt saber and takes a bit more than soldering to install, as the hole needs to be threaded or widened to fit it.

I order all of my sabers that have the option with guarded switches just so I can pull it out and put in the 12mm button. It's more comfortable than the 16mm usually used.

Also since you used the term "uni" I'm going to guess you're in Great Britain somewhere (apologies if I'm wrong but the term is far more common there) so you many find shipping and customs more than the parts unless you source them there somewhere. They can mostly be found on Amazon or other online shops. There are a few saber suppliers based there, including one  that distributes TCSS parts.

I am in the UK! Currently at Falmouth University. Is the process for installing the av switch and its converter hard? I can do it more than likey, but will have to wait a little while to get my toolbox up here
which will be about christmas time

I cheated a little. Didn't thread the new hole (tab-bits didn't work). Drilled the hole to 12mm, put a bit of white tape used in gaspipes/-connections, around the tread of the switch and press-fitted it in. Works great so far.

But if you find some UK or EU based suppliers, please do share. I'm from the Netherlands and Firehand was right about the custom-taxes...

I could PM you my TCSS shopping list if you'd like.
