Hello everyone!

First, a little bit about me just in case you wondering my background. I'm a Senior Instructor ( and Program Director ) at EMA here in Melbourne , FL. I've been a student for 33...ish years ( and will always be a student first ) and an instructor for the better part of ten years now. The last five years I've expanded the arts I train in....however, I teach Jeet Kune do and Lacoste-Inosanto Kali, Illistrismo Kali, Pekiti Tersia ( Kali ), Dumog (Kali).....you get the idea....I like Kali...I do some others as well. Savate.  BJJ.  Muay Thai.  CSW.  Wing Chun.  Capoeira. Silat....anyway... Thats how we JKD peeps do it. Always train. All arts. Let's get to business now.

This thread will be used to help teach or add, depending on your background, to your " tool " belt. Sparring/Combat tips should be posted elsewhere (unless they relate directly to the given technique). Purely Form and Function here.

I would ask that if anyone wishes to post something, be mindful of Safety first....and then please follow the format below. It will answer almost all the simple questions, I promise.

Here is our community format for teaching.

- Why and Context( What is this for. Why am I doing it this way. Context. Even examples of how YOU use it and then maybe how someone else uses it.)
- Demonstrate ( show it to us slowly. Then moderate. Then at speed. This is your "how" )
- Detail ( Break down the key points. Try not to go overboard. 5 - 10 minutes is too long. 30seconds - 2min tops. )
- Drill ( This is the key. Reps. Reps. Reps. Use different methods. In the air. Partner drills. On a post. On a heavy bag. With your hands. Etc. etc. )
- Apply ( This is the MOST important after Drills. If we don't actively engage one another in combat, we do not get better. )

After that's accomplished, it's time to " Workshop " the technique and learn the ways YOU will use it. Don't try to be exactly like your instructors. We all come from different walks of life. We are tall or short. Maybe you have a bad knee, or hip. Maybe your 20 but your training partner is 50. My point is, once you understand the fundamentals and mechanics of a drill, it's then time to make it your own.

A few weeks back, I asked some of our assistant instructors to show me how they breakdown a drill using the above method. The Jab. Every single one of them did it differently. The result? Now they all learned from one another and have 4 or 5 new ways to teach the same drill. My point is, they took what was taught to them. Understood it inside and out, and made it their own.

Ok. Back on track now.

So I can better serve the community, tell me what you would like to learn. If I think it's out of my expertise, I will go find an instructor to help. I know quite a few now that im getting.....old..er. Roll Eyes

I should note that I will be sharing one technique or drill per week. On Sundays.

Basics. Always the most important. I dug this one up from the J.o.E. LSC 2016 vault. The Why will be the -

In the future, I will post videos that cover only one given technique and demonstrate different ways to train on it. Solo  and Partner.

Footwork
Diamond / Triangle ( Open and Closed ) / Cross Stepping Basics / Moving to center
 - Diamond and Triangle footwork will train moving off-line ( angling )
 - Cross-Stepping - Learn Repositioning / Balance / Multiple Opponent Awareness
 - Moving to Center - Balance / Helps understand Range control

Fuild Strikes 1 - 4 - Lacoste Inosanto

  - Squared up - Helps understand the angles and apply shifting / " body English "

Box Drill
  - Helps with Pattern Recognition ( muscle memory ) / Fluidity / Coordiation

Yielding ( Cambiada )
  - sensitivity / disarms / coordination

Heaven Six
  - Coordination / Fluidity / Hand Speed / Pattern Recognition

Gunting ( Scissor )
  - Disarms / Control postion / coordination

5 point sumbrada ( shading )( only a demonstration)
  - Pattern Recognition / Speed / Coordination / Freeform / Reflexes / Awareness

Awesome to see you putting out new content! I always enjoy your videos. I also had no idea you were in Florida. You're only around 2 hours from me.

Thanks. The above video is missing some details that I would now add , now that im little more experienced. Still. I think it's simple enough for beginners to work on. Been seeing people ask.

Whereabout in Fl? I run seminars all over Central Florida. Feel free to come to the next one.

As promised.

I'll switch over from Kali sticks and lightsabers. I have had many people ask me whats a good way to train at home. This one is one of my favorites. Hitting something.

- The drills in this video are for developing a high level of coordination. Other added benefits include but not limited to hand speed, reflexes, pattern recognition, transitions, strength, endurance.

Footwork
- open triangle

Sinawali Drills
- Six count to heaven six to 4 count to Umbrella Heaven Six

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Br__NzSxy0" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Br__NzSxy0</a>

Fun Fact: When you cross " center line " with your hands (and feet..) you are creating new neural pathways to the left and right side of the brain. They are not fond of each other and don't like to communicate. The more you get them to work together, the more they can work separately and at the same time. Basic example that most people can do. Pat your head and rub your belly in a circle. After ten seconds, switch positions!

" But I can already do that Res. " you say?

Now try snapping a triangle with your left hand and a square in your right at the same time. That feeling your getting is called " Kali Brain ". What's great with the training method is after you get that feeling after a good training session, get some sleep. You will wake up a little bit more coordinated. Imagine if you did that 3 or 4 times a week!

Anyway. Hope you enjoy. More on the way.

More of an Demo than a lesson. Ordering a new saber for the tutorial series. Smiley decisions decisions.

I'm glad you're actively posting this kind of thing, I'm sure it'll prove useful to many. The unending Dark Times did thus create a myriad of proficient lightsaber combatants? We've all got to get together for a lightsaber battle/war to end all lightsaber battles once it's all over...

Thanks! I've gathered up some of the J.o.E. and we are going to start next week. Until then, here's one more example lesson. We did it back when April 2020 and it got a decent response.

The " Why/Demo/Detail/Drill/Apply " will be covered in the vid. I feel like I got too chatty on this one.

Skip to about 9min or so if you have two or more years experience with weapons.

The New Format. Sometimes I'll talk. Sometimes it won't be necessary.

Why - To have a format/drill to practice 6 of the 10 Basic defensive movements with footwork. Also great for Coordination training. That being said, they will never be used in this order.

Per Request. Little chatty in this one after the initial demo.

Dropping this one a little early. Busy day tomorrow.

Partner Drills in training range. We will delve into intermediate techniques soon. A few more basics to cover.

Weapon manipulation. If you can do it with a Chukka, everything else feels easier...

One of my favorite things to do. Chain techniques together.

Works so many things....just off the top of my head. Muscle memory, speed, awareness, range control, footwork, crossing centerline ( for neural pathways ) , pattern recognition, control....
