Jedi Weapons Master

« on: February 28, 2011, 09:56:03 AM »

The Obi Wan ANH holds a special place in my heart. It was the first saber I ever saw used in combat in New Hope when I was just a kid. It's the weapon of my favorite character, the one who will always represent the Jedi ideal in my eyes. The Jedi of the prequels could be snarky, overpowered and seemed to try too hard to be wise. Obi Wan just had that wisdom naturally, and clearly that translated to his weapon.

The stock FX saber has a fairly thin, grippable handle, a well ridged grenade grip for better control, a nice guard, good balance, and a great blue blade. I loved mine so much I could never even bring myself to use it in a duel for fear of harming the LED strand. Luckily, there's ultrasabers. The LED strand and blade were easily switched out for a US LED assembly and a Ultra Edge blade, the one choice for saber afficionados.

The only change I made was to replace the stock, bulky activation console for a simple US button, which I dont know if you can see on my hilt there. That made the saber just a little more my own.

Sound effects werent effected at all by the conversion, and the lightsaber is immensely sturdy.

The Obi-Wan ROTS/ANH(they're the same. What's the difference, a belt clip? Big whoop.) Is in my top 3 favorite sabers of all time. I don't know about the MR/Hasbro FX version though. I hate how the part between the emitter and choke is so fat. Same with the Luke ROTJ. But they're still ok sabers, so whatever. So in a nutshell, it's nice, but I don't know if it's something I'd buy.

Not to be nitpicky but this one has a covertec wheel. Doesn't that make this saber a ROTS?
Also there was a guy at the fx saber forums that modded the neck to be thin. It looked pretty amazing.
Hey now that you have an Obi and i will be receiving my Anakin this afternoon we should meet up.
Would be fun to have a small "you where the chosen one!!" battle  Wink

This saber is ROTS.

ANH has a Graflex clamp and bubble strip, and the neck isn't copper and brass, just brass and it's a little shorter. The ANH has a D-ring and not a covertech.

Ah so this is where this thread got to lol. Raze - I would prefer a thinner part there too, but I think they had to make considerations of sturdyness there for a mass produced product ostensibly meant for swinging and bashing versus exact authenticity.

I called it an Obi Wan ANH to differentiate it from his TPM. (he used one lightsaber in ep one and then used the same saber in ROTS and ANH, though clearly changes were made from movie to movie, as is natural with this revisionist stuff)

I'll be getting an MR Obi Wan shortly, so I'll probably be able to take a look at the differences there. I'm curious myself.

And Sjors, if we ever do meet it's a foregone conclusion that we'd have an awesome lightsaber duel. Probably several of them. Whoever survived would have some awesome pictures for the forums haha.

You could mod this into an ANH if you wanted to, JMH.  While it wouldn't be an exact replica, you could get pretty close.  Here's a reference pic:

Unfortunately, the only Obi Wan ANH's that Master Replicas made were the LE and the miniatures.  No Force FX Obi ANH  Cry  So if you turned this one into an ANH, it would stand out.

it actually wouldn't be too hard to do an MHS Obi. heres just something i threw together.

after looking at the reference i wasn't spot on, but it's pretty close. you could try something along those lines. i prefer it to the HFX cuz you get a bit thinner choke point towards the emmitter. still not as thin as the movie, but idt thats fully possible with how they're made

*Edit
re-made it to be more accurate. heres take 2

You cannot use a standard Graflex Clamp, as it's too small. You would need to get your hands on an MR Luke ESB (NOT ANH, that clamp won't fit either) and get that clamp off. That is the only clamp that will for the Obi ROTS body.
