I was wondering, is there any way that, instead of the grooves that go horizontally all around the blade, US could do grooves that go straight up and down vertically? Like, from the activator ridge back to the pommel? That would create the opportunity for some very cool customized hilts, but I realize it would be more difficult than what you do with a lathe. It might be possible to have the saber loosely in a vice and then feed it back past the drill bit slowly to achieve that effect. I think that would be especially useful on black anodized sabers.

Seems more difficult since most of the sabers appear to be done on a lathe.

Won't happen on cheaper sabers.  Having to remove the hilt from the lathe and put it in a mill is a whole 'nother set of processes which almost doubles the time it takes to cut a hilt.  Time is money, friend.
