A word of advice from Bert (the Cop):
"If you are going to open carry you Need a d@mn good holster with positive retention. You need a pistol that is nice looking, nothing obviously cheap, nothing that looks poorly maintained, and nothing flashy. Look nice. Dress better than if you aren't open carrying, it makes people less nervous and gives the impression that you know what you are doing or trained. On the note of Trained/training, GET SOME. it will always help and can never hurt."
Of you are going to carry any gun, open or concealed, please carry it in a good holster! Just like at that video of the dumb "FBI" agent losing his gun while dancing.

A bit of advice, from personal experience...
Always have a solid, low maintenance, RELIABLE firearm for every-day-carry (EDC.)  If you can find one for under $600, so much the better.
If, and heaven forbid it does, you should ever end up needing it (brandishing or shooting it) and the police are involved. Well... lets just say it would royally suck to have a $2,000+ Kimber or Dan Wesson sitting in an evidence locker for lord only knows how long.

Had a home invasion here about 2.5 years ago... two guns were stolen (they took the little safe from the nightstand)
I reported it immediately, they were recovered the next day.  20 months later, the last of the 4 youths (16-19 year olds) was sentenced.  I had to go to court to recover my property... it took nearly two years to get them back... thankfully neither was worse for wear, but still...

She's done some research, and is no longer looking to open carry as a daily thing. She's looking at the gun range here, as they have a rental program.

Even when doing backflips while dancing?

Well ... not while doing a spin side-kick.  That's probably the closest to a back-flip I can or will ever get...

So my friend has informed me that she signed up for a program at the local range, which includes both classroom and range instruction, included practice time, and all the necessary paperwork. Basically if you pass the class you get your permit. She also went to the shop at the range that appears to have steered her away from .45 ACP.

why would you steer people away from .45?
maybe my mentality of research on what I'm interested in and having my mind set. if they don't want to sell me that, or talk me out of it...I'll walk and find a shop that will.

Because she didn't really know what she wanted. I'm sure if she really wanted a 45 for some reason, they would have been happy to sell it to her.

Exactly, she didn't know, so she asked for recommendations. It sounds like they showed her .380 that she seemed to really like.

The most important thing to me, she liked the service she got, the gentlemen at the shop were helpful and nice, not patronizing, and only offered advice when she asked for it. It seems that any "male interest" shops such as gun shops, auto parts stores, etc. sometimes have a "you're a woman, therefore you know nothing" attitude, which results in a lot of mansplaining," and not really listening. She was excited that this shop didn't do that, which is good.

I want a .38 special revolver. My buddy had one, and I loved shooting it. No markswoman, but I'd be able to ruin an attackers day with it, that's for sure.

Sounds cool. Any particular model you're thinking of?

First gun I qualified with was a S&W model 66. And yes I love shooting that gun! Especially with the magnum loads.
