It was a good run, almost a month of not firing anybody myself, but all good things must come to an end. and boy did it end with a bang.

I had to fire one of my managers. He no-call-no-showed when he was supposed to be opening, I bumped him down to assistant manager and told him to hand over the keys and he refused to hand it over. So I dropped it for long enough to call the district manager, who told me to call to police. So I did. twenty minutes later the police have gotten the keys and are helping the now former employee to clean out his locker. I didn't request that they escort him, they just did it after I told him to clean out his locker and leave.

Questions I don't mind:

Are/Did you going/go to college?

Do you have Children?

What I do mind is when I answer "no" to those questions, I get the  Third degree.

Why is it a big deal not to have children?  I've never wanted kids, I hate responsibility.  I don't even like dating anymore, i hate compromsing, i hate doing things i don't want to do, i hate social obligations.  My best friend has four kids, I babysit them. They are well behaved and thus awesome, but hey I can give them back afetr a few hours.  I can't do that all the time though, I'm a great part-time parent.

I am not opposed to being different, "be yourself, no matter what they say.", to quote the great philosopher Sting.  But if you take a job knowing that there is a uniform requirement (in this case it's "business attire, such as a button shirt belt and black slacks or khakis ") and you insist on wearing a Hawaiian shirt not tucked into your khaki shorts even after being told that it is not appropriate you will get a formal warning.

To be specific, its the assumption that if I don't have children..that I don't want them and thus the third degree.

Defend your choice by mentioning crime, hunger, climate, money, over-crowding, unemployment, disease, crime...

Bringing another life into all of that is almost third degree worthy in itself, IMO.

Of course, the aforementioned overpopulation is primarily due to the kind of people who cannot comprehend why someone would deliberately NOT have children.  To them, creating more human beings is not only a right, but an expectation!

Personally, I've always felt that we need some kind of check on reproduction.  I know it gets into some moral questions, but the fact that ANYONE can reproduce and introduce potential monsters into the world is baffling to me.  Creating a life, then shaping that life through your parenting, is a MASSIVE amount of power.  To me, it seems far more potentially dangerous than even guns or vehicles (both of which we need a license to own/operate).

I'm torn.... part of me agrees that it's something we should do. Most other species have natural occurrences that keep population down, but humans have figured out how to all but eliminate these things. Hence overpopulation. It's not common for a newborn or infant to die of disease(relative compared to how it used to be as well as in the rest of the animal kingdom) and humans don't have any natural predators, meaning a very high percentage of children survive until maturity(meaning to an age where they COULD conceivably survive on their own if need be, so about 13 I'd say). On the other side, life expectancy has SKYROCKETED higher than ever, meaning we have millions of people alive who would be long dead even 50 years ago. Modern medicine saves many people, old and young, who would simply not survive otherwise.

On the other hand, the Feminist in me is saying "Stay out of my(proverbial) uterus!"

Not only Moral, but political and ethical.  So much so I doubt we could truly discuss it freely here on he forum without breaking rules.  Especially since I have met some very good people who came from horrible parents and some horrible people that came from good parents.    Just an extra nitpick, you only need a license to carry a firearm. Not to own one.

Think of it this way, you have to jump through flaming hoops to adopt one child but if you pop out 20 of them yourself it is all good even if you are a drug addled alcoholic.

I know a couple who tried to adopt, and eventually succeeded. They put everything under a microscope. Their income, employment and work history, residential status, credit score, family, and they had to go to at least three sessions with a counselor individually who evaluated their mental health status and fitness as a parent. Then they had to do three sessions AS A COUPLE to have their relationship evaluated.

Meanwhile her underemployed, poverty stricken, immature sister who keeps getting kicked out of apartments for inability to pay rent, was pregnant with her third child out of wedlock.  Shocked

It's crazy.

UGH! Don't get me started on CPS. I will burn the world down. Angry

But in my experience of humans, I deduced that there are 2 major types: breeders and bystanders. (Apply whatever you like to the "powers that be") But whatever Force brought humans into being had the foresight to know that humans will quickly become the dominant species on the planet and live long lives and consume copious resources. This coupled with the fact that most of us group together for protection (even though we have no natural predators) and we don't have a set mating season, makes us very dangerous to the planet's ability to sustain life. Just imagine how many humans there would be if EVERY human capable of breeding were doing so. You think it's crowded now? It would be a very sad state of affairs if this scenario were to come to pass.

Depends on the state - as a NJ resident, I need to apply for a permit just to buy one.  Still, there are a lot of political concepts here we could explore, but we'd be breaking rules and potentially causing trouble.

I'm not advocating any particular morally questionable action, I just like to point out things that we take for granted.  As TJ and Xamon mentioned, adoption is highly regulated, while reproduction is something anyone (qualified or unqualified) can do.  There's no easy solution to that problem, but it's definitely a strange thing when you think about it.  Whether incompetent or actively malicious, poor parenting can be abusive to both the children, and the world those children will eventually affect...

That's an easy one: license people to breed. This would solve sooooooooooooooo many problems. Roll Eyes I'm not saying it in the sense of specifically selecting individuals to breed for traits, but in the sense of you must prove that you're capable of handling the responsibilities of being a good parent.

Yeah, as much as I like that idea, there are definitely a LOT of difficulties with it.  Maybe one day we'll figure it out, who knows.

Well.....for those that know Roll Eyes, there's a movie out there about how if populations aren't electively controlled, nature will eventually thin the herd, but with significantly more suffering. Sad
