Title: Opinions on Costume?
Post by: Darth Abaddon on December 06, 2012, 08:07:13 AM
I recently was made aware of a site with Medieval clothing and I think I potentially found my costume aside from a belt and a mask (have the mask). What do you guys think?

Overcoat will be black
Tunic will be red

Hmm... looks very interesting.  For Star Wars, you should probably avoid laces on the boots, but otherwise it could very well work.  You were thinking for a Sith costume, right?

More or less. I like the black options rather than the white and brown robes of the traditional jedi. Despite my username, which I don't know how to change, I'm more of a grey area/sentinel. And you to bring up a good point. I'll see if I can find an alternative. I'm usually pretty good at finding things like that at thrift stores and retail stores. Thanks for the tip. I like to shy away from the traditional jedi clothing.

Hmm... yeah, that'll work nicely for a Grey.  The red might everyone automatically think "Sith" though.  Maybe if the tunic were a cooler color, it'd offset the sithiness of the black, and bring the overall appearance back toward grey some more.

Perhaps the earth green color then? Now I'm considering making the tunic and trousers green. I'm not worried about the saber matching the clothing as some people are. I'm getting a RGB so I'll have plenty of choice.

You get a point for going RGB.  I love mine, even if the mixed colors don't quite match their single-color counterparts in hue.

And yeah, earth green for the tunic would work well.  With the pants it might be a little too solid-color, but the green tunic definitely would work.  I have a forest green Jedi ensemble myself, with a dark dark green cloak.

This is true. It will be a while before I get these. At least another month so I have plenty of time to mull it over. Thanks for the advice.

I think that would be a very unique costume. But if you're going for a grey Jedi look, I would avoid red. Green would be a good option. I don't think that green pants would be too "solid". You don't see much of the pants anyway.

What I personally don't like that much is the golden trim. Maybe you could ask them to use a different trim. This shouldn't be a problem as this outfit is custom made.

I like the boots. They might be unusual for Star Wars, but you're not going for a traditional outfit anyway. But that's your decision.

That's a neat site! Simple, yet lots of ideas that could be converted to Jedi themes with little to no effort at all. I likes!

Darth Abba (sorry made me smile) do you sew?

Reason I ask...money saved etc...I liked your presented items and when I saw the trousers I saw a common pair of karate gi pants ($15-$18) with a section cut out of the back leg then laced ($2-$4).

This is a good thing in my book...it helps others see how easy a pair of Jedi pants can be to make  :)

The colors for your 1st item, that is the rub right?

I could do a quick photoshop of the color you like on the site photo to get an idea if you like, should only take a couple minutes...I will be at my computer later or this weekend if you would like some help in that direction  :)

Qui-Gon's pants looked like sack cloth that was hastiliy stitched together, or maybe just old. I love that look!

It would be greatly appreciated. Could you do green for the tunic and black for the coat and pants please?

Yep when I get back tonight...if there are a couple options let me know and will knock them out.

I will also make a white version so anyone could drop color in with a fill tool  :)

Another option is brown cloak and pants and green tunic. Thank you very much in advance.

These belts are awesome. But I don't know if I'd be willing to spend that much money on just a belt.

@Abaddon: good choice.

Yeah, seriously.  Check your local Goodwill, Salvation Army or other secondhand/thrift shop once a week until a plain wide belt turns up (one always does, check the ladies section) and add some button studs (https://www.google.ca/search?num=10&hl=en&safe=off&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1300&bih=802&q=leather+button+stud&oq=leather+button+stud&gs_l=img.3..0i24.1968.5448.0.7160.23.13.2.8.10.0.107.849.12j1.13.0...0.0...1ac.1.jZD7RfD5e6c) and a standard sized belt (also second-hand) and you have a Starwars belt for $25 at most.  :D

Belt's covered, boots are covered, mask is covered. Just the clothes is what I need. Thanks though guys. Much appreciated.

Honestly I like those first boots you showed the best. I think they look great and who cares if they aren't exactly like every other star wars boot. I think you could just add a bit of armor or just a sort of wrap to cover the laces if it was that big a deal, but really those boots look SUPER comfy, I want some now.. now where to get the money..

That's a cool find, Ricos! Thanks for posting!

You may consider just putting "Dark Side Points Only" in your forum signature as well. It would save you from typing it everytime and would be there with all of your posts. That said, have one! :)

I have a new idea for my costume. I'm thinking traditional robes. The tunic will be hunter green and the obi, tabards, pants, boots and robe will be brown. For the tabards I was thinking brown heavy weight linen or wool. I still have to get my measurements and contact twin roses for an estimate. What do you guys think will be better, linen or wool? Any color suggestions for any pieces?

I'm going for the earthy grey jedi look.

Abaddon - where do you live?  If you live where it is warm, go for linen - linen breathes a bit more than wool, and is a lighter fabric that won't trap as much heat.

Linen IS easier to clean.
