Title: Ideas for a decent Sith costume.
Post by: Darth Kitsune on December 16, 2012, 03:45:44 AM
I've just recently made my first purchase (today) of an Ultrasaber saber, and I am looking to make a decent Sith costume for future events. I need some ideas for one. I might do something simple, like the Sith robes that are similar to the Jedi getup, however I am on a limited budget. Of course, I will be putting this together over the course of a year, and I know I can find some good costume items around Halloween. However, I'd like to see if I can get some inspiration from the community here.

If I were to go in the direction of sith I would go one of two ways...

regal and grand, like an inquisitor...with some flourish and style...think old school high end Chinese official/royalty or even like Bleach Soul Reaper or Naruto Akatsuki

And the second consideration is the potential for the degradation of your body due the foul energies passing through you...so a respirator or the face mask...

This seems to be the common sith badge of late...if this is your thought also...you can go inexpensive, make one, but I would focus on being O R I G I N A L create a design of your own that can not be mistaken for another.

I actually have some old filtration masks I can alter and make into breathing apparati. Also, I was thinking the same. I actually have a heavy influence of Japanese culture in my life so I might put together an outfit with some Japanese flare to it. I still would like to purcase a robe of some sort, but I'll figure that out whenever I can. I definately need boots.

I would skip the boots and go for a hakama!

You end up with a robe like look without the robe  :)

Good hakama are expensive. Cheaper Hakama fall apart most of the time. That isn't a bad idea though. The reason I want boots are for, if I managed to get a decent hakama, I'd wear those because of durability and practicality.

Completely up to you my friend  :)

I have had several hakamas in the $50-$75 range that worked out great for actual martial arts and not costume play...you can make one for about the same.

A decent set of boots can run $150-$300.

I actually have a decent idea now but I have to formulate it somehow. All because of that Hakama you mentioned.

I know that some folks around have used EVA foam to create armor...

It really depends on the exact sort of Sith one goes for - are you going front-line warrior, or master from the shadows?

A bit of both. In life, I am fairly physcially strong, and can often overwhelm people. At the same time, I like to mess with the minds and psych of others, working from the shadows and within. My largest issue with costuming is finances and lack of resources, however.

Sith costumes are almost always black, often with red or silver accents.  I would say purple, gold or burgundy would work as well.

If you were going for a regal look like Darth Sidious - rich fabrics - brocades, velvets, metallic trims, satins, silk.  Perhaps a kimono-style robe.  Something that says this is a person with power and money.  A master manipulator or a victorious and prosperous warrior.

Distressed fabrics are good for a Sith who has been worn down by the dark side - ragged fabrics, torn.  Shredded crinkle cotton or cotton gauze, rough fabrics - perhaps even burlap.  You can do the weathering effects yourself with sandpaper or a wire brush.  Diluted bleach might help to fade blacks to a rusty brown, but test a sample first.

Twin Roses has some good ideas on their website: http://www.twinrosesdesigns.com/Star%20Wars%20Inspired%20Clothing%20Portfolio.html#Clothing_for_the_Dark_Side (http://www.twinrosesdesigns.com/Star%20Wars%20Inspired%20Clothing%20Portfolio.html#Clothing_for_the_Dark_Side)

That site actually gave me a lot of inspiration as well.

OK.  I guess a better refinement of the question would be which do you want to project in the costume?  Warrior or Force-adept?  I mean, being able to go either way is fine.  But the thing, to me at least, is that in costuming the character, that shows the aspect you most want to project.

Second question - are you skilled in sewing, or do you know someone who is?  That's often the best way to get cheaper ideas for costuming.  You can also get fabrics better suited for where you live.  For example, I live in Texas - most of my Sith costume is made of linen, which wicks away sweat and breathes better than cotton.

Twin Roses actually has an forum account here, as Twin Roses.  They have stated that they have a range of fabrics, and they're happy to assist potential customers with information to ensure they get the right sort of fabric/costume.  You could send a private message their way, but I don't think that they're on here very much - they DO have a business to run...

I will have to look into that. Seeing the costs of their costumes, it isn't THAT bad. At least, it would be something I would request assistance from my family around Christmas NEXT year. This year we spent our money on a Wii U. XD

But yes, I live in Alabama, where it is either extremely hot and humid, or cold and wet depending on the time of year. I might end up talking to Twin Roses as I do not have any sewing skills nor do I know anybody that does.

Not sure if this was mentioned previously or not, but if i were in your situation i would look for boots first (assuming your feet are likely to grow any time soon). Boots usually are what separate decent costumes from good ones, they don't have to be expensive ones or even flashy, but they make the costume 10X better than an old pair of vans

I will probably use women's boots. My feet will not grow any time soon, because I am an adult. I've stopped growing. XD

As for the boots, there is a store nearby that sells boots in the women's section that aren't too effeminate and would work well for costuming. I have a pair of brown ones actually that are for a Link (from the LoZ) costume that I put together a while back. I'll just run out and buy black ones for about $50.00 when I can.

i would also try to avoid lace up boots if you can, many of the star wars characters in the movies and cartoon seem to have slip-on boots or boots that are buckle sides. Amazon might be a good place to check for some cheap boots. be aware though, you get what you pay for with amazon.

Yes, there are no laces or zippers in Star Wars!  And buttons, hooks, and velcro are very rare.  If you can get some leather and dye it to match the boots you can make a cover for any laces.  I believe this is what the movies did on Obi-Wan and Anakin's boots.

I have an idea right now.

Chinese Martial Art's Shirt, long Sleeved, Black
Kung Fu Pants, Black
Black boots, knee height.
That tunic overcoat, Black as well.
Belt of some sort.
Black Scarf
Cape
Accenting...things that I find.

For my sith costume I have a silk black and red Chinese robe.

also on a side note, I don't always wear the mask.

For some reason, when I saw that, my mind was thinking, "Sith Pyro from TF2". I think it's because of the mask. XD

I went with a hakama and a hooded robe combo. I liked the layered shape it provides and feel it flows well overall with the addition of a belt. We'll see how it holds up after I finish the remaining armor to go with it.

Looks good to me.

One small thing...most everyone who siths out with the mask leaves their neck open...try covering with black scarf...helps the suspension of the mask IMO  :)

I think the kuchkie garb would be more dark or rouge Jedi.
