Title: Custom Manticore
Post by: Tutu on December 23, 2012, 03:34:40 PM
Hello,
These are some pics of my first custom lightsaber, a Manticore VA with sound and blue AV switch.

I wanted to make a heavy battle-weathered look and I think this is how it looks now :)

The hardest part is the first hit on the saber because it has an awesome look without cutomizing it...

Please tell me what you think of it  ;)

Amazing work!! The Manticore is a piece of art on its own and you made it even more so with this! Great weathering!

Nice weathering, but the wrap's color is throwing it off in my opinion. I think you need a darker brown/more worn out wrap to tie the saber more nicely together.  :)

Sick saber. Looks like its been through tons of battles. I agree about the brown leather though. Should be a tad bit darker. What kind of leather is that and how did you apply it on the saber? I might do the same to my Bellicose. =]

AMAZING weathering, and I think the leather is just fine for that blade color ;)

Nice work

Impressive. Most impressive.

Love the Manticore, it's totally on my MUST HAVE list, but here you've done a magnificent job of giving it that battle-worn effect. This truly does look like the weapon of a battle-hardened Jedi Knight.  ;)

Really, really amazing work on the hilt!!

The weathered look is incredibly well done. I like the look of the Manticore hilt and was wondering if anyone has ever tried to force 2 Manticore Sabers to a double bladed staff...

I don't know if that'll be possible because of the end of the hilt near the pommel. But well, you really showed your talents, great job!

Nice job on the scratches and blemishes. Definitely got that thing battered up. I couldn't bring myself to do that to mine. I just pretend I'm better than Anakin about not dropping my saber so mine can still look sexy after so many battles.

I plan on getting a second Manticore in a couple months so Ill post pics of it as a staff for sure. The pommel is MHS so it can be coupled.

Thanks everyone  :)

@Zren Tobas: the leather wrap is made of vegetable tanned leather, and it's about 0.1mm thick. I used the hardened leather technique to wrap it around the hilt. First you put your piece of leather in hot water, that makes the leather go really flexible and it will stay in shape when it dries. So I wrapped it when wet and used a hair dryer to dry it quickly.
As the leather is not tainted, the brown will turn darker with the sweat from the hands. I don't know any other means than using it to have this effect on leather so I just have to use it a lot to finish the customizing  :P

That is an amazing piece of work you have there! It is truly glorious!! As stated by Valx, I couldn't do that to mine. Maybe if I got a stunt specifically for customizing, but I digress. The idea of "having" to use it to tone the leather color is kind of awesome, give a truly personal touch of customization on top of the spectacularness  it is at the present! May it bring you joy and your enemies fear so great they run screaming! :D

To get the darker  color  if that's what you ar e wanting go to a saddle shop. Get Neats Foot oil.

set the saber in the sun  take a brush and brush the oil into the leather until it wont soak up any more

the leather will darken. leave in the sun dawn to dusk 2 days

then id it still isnt fdark enough just go back to the saddle shop and tell them you want some leather dye

try the oil first though because looking at that leather it should darken considerably just using the neats foot oil

That reminds me of Rahm Kotas hilt from the first Force Unleashed not quite the same because of the emitter but overall a similar feel... I like it looks very kewl. I def agree with Valx I don't know that I'd have the courage to do that to my Manticore.  :D

Very nice work, my friend. Certainly, you have made this weapon your own.

This looks amazing. Great work on the hilt. It's almost like if someone found Mace Windu's hilt after it fell and was beat up and added they some grip to it.

Also thought it was reminiscent of Kota's.
I do feel like the leather is a bit...new-looking. Something darker and if there's a way to weather it, and it'd look great. My sister does some leather work, may have to ask her about whipping something up for my Aeon

Definitely would like to see some pics of that! Not really a fan of the aeons more of the dominix but hey anything that makes the saber your own!
