Title: Adding a switch to turn on/off sound
Post by: Ryathimus on January 07, 2013, 10:28:37 PM
Hey guys,

I've recently acquired some new Ultrasabers with sound. I was looking at the wiring diagram (I got the buckpuck with killswitch option) and was wondering if there's a way to add in another switch so that i can either use my saber with or without sound whenever I want, without disrupting the LEDs.

Cheers

Another switch would require drilling holes, soldering and heat shrink.  I suggest just stuffing your pommel with cotton balls.  I do that and I cannot hear the sound unless I put the saber right next to my ear.

Yeah i've read about the cotton balls and I believe you that it works quite well, i'm just trying to think of a more elegant way of doing it. Plus if i wanted to change between sound and no sound i'd have to keep unscrewing the pommel and taking the cotton balls out. It may require more work but I think if I can pull it off it'll work great.

Then you would need to drill a hole to accommodate a latching switch, cut one of the speaker wires, solder each end to the switch, insert switch and you are done.

Simple as that right?   :D

And to increase my knowledge, would either wire matter or do i need to cut and and a switch to a certain one (positive or negative).

It doesn't matter.  You are breaking the circuit either way.

Yep, that's true. Thanks for the clarification.   ;D

You could also wire a very small sliding switch to the red speaker wire and tuck it in under the Obsidian board... maybe on the opposite side of the USB port. Sure, you'd have to slide out the battery pack to use it, but you'd certainly get what you were looking for with almost zero effort or cost.

Couldn't you just use jst connectors on the speaker wires? That would make it faster and easier to disconnect and reconnect.

This would certainly work, but it might not be as durable as a switch.
