First of all, welcome to the boards and to the UltraSabers community. It is always nice to see a fresh face ready to learn! To answer your question, yes, they are designed to take a beating. A lot of beatings actually. The blades are a very strong polycarbonate and will pretty much take whatever you can dish out. There is a difference between mid grade and heavy grade blades. Though the mid grade may be brighter, the heavy grade can take more damage, since there is thicker layer of polycarbonate. Not saying that a heavy grade will not be bright, all US blades are very bright. If you want a more in depth comparison, I did a review in the review section of the boards. Mid-Grade and Heavy-Grade comparison, I believe. Check that out if you wish you can see some pictures of some blades. All in all though, either one you choose is a good choice and you will find yourself in a very fun hobby.

For the best tips I would suggest just looking throughout the boards. There is a lot of info on here and goes from pretty basic to stuff to more advance stuff, like customizing your blade and such. You are just starting off, so just browse the sabers and info, get a feel for everything, and then go from there.
