Title: 3D Printing Sabers
Post by: borgishmorg on May 02, 2013, 10:29:32 PM
Hey all, so basically I have a question or two on 3D printing, so if anyone has any knowledge on the subject, please reply. So first off, my sister and her boyfriend are planning to start a 3D printing business, and I thought couldn't they make me lightsaber parts? So first question, how reasonable would it be to make a lightsaber part that is preferably MHS compatible and wouldn't break on the 3D printer? And second, how much would it cost approx.?

Also is there anything else I could have done on a 3D printer? Armor, blasters, belt pouches, etc.?
I basically have no idea how these things work other than you can just make stuff out of a special kind of carbonate plastic.

This would be awesome to do. Technically free hilts just gotta buy the electronics. Lol. Post pictures if they allow you to do this with their machine. Me and my brother want a 3D printer so bad but getting the other extra stuff would be expensive.

3D printing is also an awesome way to make a CURVED HILT.

These things are the future. Not some pseudo-futuristic poodoo like another new super thin model of cellphone, but a real, honest-to-goodness invention of the XXI century. They are bound to become more available with time, just like all groundbreaking inventions.

Dude, do you realize how much it costs me to transport ordered stuff to where I live? A small MHS part may cost not more than $10, but I still have to pay $50 for the delivery. Also, not everyone ships to Russia, you know.

It's the same for me, to get a saber from ultrasabers I pay ~$45, to ship something as small as an MLS unit it still costs ~$28.

Sometimes I really wish I lived in the US, but only sometimes :p

Oh yea I didn't even think of that, though I admit I never really liked curved sabers, like Dooku's or Ventress'.
Really though, I'd prefer to just make certain parts, pommel, emitter, etc., on the printer, not an entire hilt made of any non-metal materiel. But thanks for everyone's input, and since they're trying to make this a business, I would hope they'd be willing to ship all over to guys like you because I think they could make some profit in the 'lightsaber community'.

EDIT: And in response to your other post Rina, I think you are right, just like Henry Ford wanted to make the automobile available to everyone, I believe these things will be too.

I would be so awesomeee. I think armor would be sick, easy, and you could imagine anything intricut and have it done. I would love to see a 3d printed lightsaber as well. If anyone finds a picture, please post it!

EDIT:

Also, this guy made some badass 3D printed armor..I'm feeling like in the years to come everyone will have the sickest cosplay ever.
He has how he did it all on his Deviantart Journal.

No idea. See in my family I'm the youngest child and have always been out of the loop, so I probably won't know until they actually go and do it.
