Title: my attempt at SWTOR sanctified caretakers robe (photo heavy)
Post by: B1ondeange1 on June 29, 2013, 04:04:55 PM
so this is kinda a continuation of my thread here http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=13589.0 (http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=13589.0)
but since the robe if finished I thought it deserved its own thread, as im pretty pleased with the result

so- here it is, the finished robe!

(http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp195/b1ondeange1/costumes/temporary_zpsee9ef0fc.jpg) (http://s411.photobucket.com/user/b1ondeange1/media/costumes/temporary_zpsee9ef0fc.jpg.html)

(http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp195/b1ondeange1/costumes/temporary_zps55e9e25d.jpg) (http://s411.photobucket.com/user/b1ondeange1/media/costumes/temporary_zps55e9e25d.jpg.html)

this thing took hours to make I promise you. each stripe was sewn on, and see the light brown thick stripe with two dark thin stripes? well stupid me cut this the wrong way the first time, the lengths I had made up were only JUST big enough for what I needed, so I had to start a length from scratch. was NOT impressed! also meant I ran very short on bias binding (which was used for the narrow dark stripe) and I had to unpick some lengths of it off my stuff up piece to have enough of it. but it all worked out in the end!
I actually really enjoyed the challenge of making this, ive never attempted something like this before and im really pleased with how its come out. my sewing machine on the other hand isn't, its sounding slightly unhealthy. it was a cheapy and I think something got damaged in it ages back though it never worked properly from the start (my luck, I often have this issue with mechanical or electrical things I often somehow end up with a dud, weve got two friends with the exact same sewing machine and they've never had a problem), so I think it might be time to invest in a newer better one
for those of you who don't know the armor set, its this:

yes, I know its not an exact match. the stripes up the centre back I might add later if I feel like it. and it was a combination of I forgot plus I didn't have enough material to do the dark brown sections inside the front bottom curvy cream bit (that's not really visible in these photos, so take my word on that :P). and for the observant, theres three dark brown stripes inside the wide light stripe, and the wide light stripe is outlined with dark stripes.... but that was getting waaaaaayyyyyyyy too difficult!

just before leaving home for Supa Nova Perth 2013 today- im wearing the costume with some cheap black boots that I love, the tabard and pants are from my old costume, got a white long sleeved shirt and the tunic is one I quickly knocked together in a couple of hours last night and this morning (ran outta time to make the pants, and meh didn't care the old pants worked with it!). here im just wearing a brown belt I grabbed out of the cupboard. I also ran out of time to finish the shoulder armor, so it didn't get worn. will see how I feel tomorrow morn but I might quickly get them finished and added. the shoulder armor im going to have to redo later, im pleased with them as a first attempt at foam armor building but I think I could do better with practice. ill also be adding gloves and bracers later down the track. im not necessarily going for the exact look of the entire outfit however, I just love the look of the robe with the shoulder armor!

(http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp195/b1ondeange1/costumes/WP_20130629_005_zps3275bc77.jpg) (http://s411.photobucket.com/user/b1ondeange1/media/costumes/WP_20130629_005_zps3275bc77.jpg.html)

first stall I stopped and really looked in at Supa Nova I found a utility style belt with a tonnes of different pockets for only $50- and it fitted. I was stoked, ive been needing a belt with pockets and while id love a nice leather belt this will do just nicely! needless to say my crummy belt came off, new belt went on

(http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp195/b1ondeange1/costumes/WP_20130629_022_zps71986b55.jpg) (http://s411.photobucket.com/user/b1ondeange1/media/costumes/WP_20130629_022_zps71986b55.jpg.html)

trying to show off the back of it
(http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp195/b1ondeange1/costumes/WP_20130629_028_zps594f26a4.jpg) (http://s411.photobucket.com/user/b1ondeange1/media/costumes/WP_20130629_028_zps594f26a4.jpg.html)

with my sister- if any of you can correctly guess her costume then you will get a point and the knowledge that you are both extremely clever and possibly sad all in one, I doubt anyone will get it :P
(http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp195/b1ondeange1/costumes/WP_20130629_026_zpsab0a3d00.jpg) (http://s411.photobucket.com/user/b1ondeange1/media/costumes/WP_20130629_026_zpsab0a3d00.jpg.html)

with some rebels :P
(http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp195/b1ondeange1/costumes/WP_20130629_016_zpsa727be0a.jpg) (http://s411.photobucket.com/user/b1ondeange1/media/costumes/WP_20130629_016_zpsa727be0a.jpg.html)

we then came home and tried to get some photos of the saber in the dark- didn't show up the costume well but we had great fun using my mums tiny city car as a sound system playing music while we played with my saber. my sister as some of you may remember is a bellydancer, she picked up my lightsaber and instantly was looking like a pro with it. jealous, will def be wanting to learn how to use it properly! my lovely sister showed me a few tricks however :D ive got her hooked, she wants one. our next saber order is going to be huge I think!
I got a few more photos ill post later, right now im tired and its my bed time- another big day at Supa Nova tomorrow!
also, Carrie Fisher is at Supa Nova doing photographs and signing- im real real tempted to line up and get her autograph! don't think that opportunity will come up again!

Those lines turned out very, very well and wind up adding a lot of character to the garment.

Totally groovy, here is a point.

thankyou for your kind remarks :) im rather pleased with it, pretty much came out as I imagined. there was a lot of pattern adjusting and whatnot, and it worked out :D
I had a book author look gobsmacked when we were talking costumes and my sister said that I made my costume perfect to the detail and I said no I didn't- he just looked at me and said what?! you made that yourself?! I thought it was professionally made! that made my day :)

Very nice job!!!
I remember you talking about this robe before and the result speaks for itself. That is awsome and very much looks professional made. I love the colors and lines...it all just works!! And of course, it looks great on you. The costume suits you well and even though I do not know you personally, it looks right on you.
You should be very proud, Angel, and wear it everywhere!!
Point, absolutely.

It turned out great, so very good job on it. I wouldn't mind having one of those belts either.

Holy crap, that turned out really well.  Nice job!  I like seeing some of the SWTOR costumes come to life, it adds a bit of variety to the typical Jedi ensemble that you see so commonly.

Seconded.

Great job on the robes!!  They do look amazing.  And it's nice to see something that breaks up the lines of the standard robes.  Well done!

Hey everyone, I thought I would revive this thread to give updates to my costume.

From the original pictures posted here from Supanova Perth 2013, I have now made pants to match the outer tunic (as can be seen in photos floating around the forum in places), I have finished off the shoulders on the tunic properly and I have remade the tabard and obi and put in snap fasteners, buttons, elastic etc to make the whole lot easier to get on and off, as previously I had to safety pin myself into it each time. Since I'm now getting around with the Rebel Legion and I'm also looking at (hopefully soon) joining Rebel Empire who are a costuming and lightsaber choreography/ stage performance group I figured it was necessary lol! Now I'm not constantly adjusting my costume to make sure it is straight as it tends to stay put! I still have to figure out how to fasten the robe across the front without pins, this is something I am working on.

All that is left on this outfit (to complete this version before I make my RL one) is to put a cuff on the pants because they are too short and keep riding up trying to come out of the boots (as I ran out of fabric to make them that inch longer) and to get a proper belt and boots. I am eyeing off a particularly nice Corellian Imports prequel style belt with cream edging that will go lovely with this outfit, but it is a little on the pricey side. For now I shall just keep dreaming about that lol. Oh, and I might one day get around to finished the shoulder armour.

A note- while I'm joining in with the RL, this is NOT RL approved, I'm simply along as a new recruit.

Under the robe- most of this is hidden by the robe which is always on since it is an integral part of the costume, but I thought it was high time I remade the tabard and obi since my previous were from my very old cheap cheats outfit. It also acted as good practice for when I make my RL membership costume. When I do that, I'm going to make the tabard and obi less wide. These are the things you learn as you go!

Outfit with all the additions

Side view- yes, I'm laughing my head off as I had a particularly blonde moment and had to think twice about which direction was right when asked to turn right lol!  ::)

Annnndddddd just because I can and we all love photos (a few shots from the event RL and some other local costuming clubs attended). That's my AS shock staff with the two yellowish colour discs on it (I think it is a yellow and orange colour disc together? Either way, it produces a lovely shade of yellow but remains fairly bright). 5 hours of having it running relatively solidly and I went through two sets of batteries :)

Star Wars and Firefly- my two favourite universes  ;D

no real updates on the costume, sadly I don't have the time or money atm. But another event photo from the weekend just been, coz we all love photos!  ;D I never figured this costume would get so much use when I made it, but I'm really enjoying getting out and costuming regularly!

fundraising with the Rebel Legion and 501st :) we have another fairly big event this weekend so hopefully I'll get some more photos then :)

with some tall jawas and a short stormtrooper!  ;D yes, he gets the "aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?" all the time- he has a penalty jar for anyone who says it haha

Very nice. Actually looks good without the armor to be honest, like its your own. And that double blade Shock SY saber matches perfectly over the Archon I think. So see, not ALL boots have to be knee high. You did it right. =]

Some experience you have in this wardrobe creation...Quite ambitious and well executed!!! ;)
The armor can take this project to the next level with an awesome paint job and attention to detail.

I'm still working on building up the nerve to attempt sewing my own cloak as I'm new to this "sewing thing".
Probably gonna have a couple of Sith designs I really want done "properly" custom made.
I'll then consider making a few alterations to a base Simplicity pattern referenced in my wardrobe thread below:

Angel, that robe is incredibly beautiful: the lines are CLEAN; they look professionally done.  I wonder: have you/will you try any other SWTOR robes?  I've seen several pics and, from what I've seen of your skill-set, I bet that you could more than do them justice in execution  ;)
