Title: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Manroon on August 02, 2013, 07:56:47 PM Okay, so basically, I got a SNES about two weeks ago now, and I'm loving it. My first console as a kid was N64, but a good friend had one of these as did my older sister, so there's some nostalgia and I'm just having a blast getting into all the old school 16 bit stuff I never really got to play back in the day. :) The purpose of this thread shall be for the discussion of all things SNES. Waxing Nostalgic or discussion of What You're Playing Now, Recommendations, Codes, Tips and Tricks, etc. I'll kick off. ;)
Two weeks ago I was coming back from a pick up run with the Boss. It had, in short, been a total bust and an annoying waste of gas going out to Riverside... so we stopped off at a swap meet out there, which was also looking like a total bust. Nothing but discount skinny jeans and knock off cell phone cases, until about halfway through when I found one booth of nothing but Nintendo. GOOD Nintendo. ;D Refurbed systems, cartridges of all kinds, etc. The Boss floated me a 100 bucks advance off my paycheck and I walked away with the SNES, a Boxed copy of Aladdin (what got me to buy the SNES lol), Super Mario Kart, and a copy of Star Trek 25th Anniversary for Game Boy. A junk booth at the other end of the show yielded a cheap second controller, Sim City, and Star Trek the Next Generation. A trip to the local pawn shop that Wed yielded Super Tennis and NHL Stanley Cup. So far I've tried em' all except NHL and the Gameboy Star Trek. Running favorite, surprisingly, is Super Tennis followed by Sim City. I LOVED Sim City on the PC as a kid, it was one of my first games, and it's even more fun now that I actually understand the goals and principles of the game. XD I hope to pick up Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle, Super Mario All Stars, Starfox, and Wing Commander eventually, as well as the Super Star Wars games, Super Indiana Jones, and Arkenoid. Might go for Space Invaders as well, but that's really my Dad's game and I dunno if I want to accept the brutal whoopin' that will come from owning that one. lol But of course, who knows how many of those I'll ever actually get, and what else I might trip over and pick up. I know I'd like to get the Super Famicon Ranma games as well.... and of course the system's Zelda game. I'd also like to pick up a storage box, I think, but I'm not sure. I'm kinda torn there, because I'd like to track down original boxes for all my games. (I'm funny like that) And the storage boxes for cartridges aren't made to hold games in their original boxes. What do you guys think? And do you have any recommendations for good games and/or accessories? I'm kinda curious about that shooting game with the big bazooka looking light gun.... lol Okay guys.... let the SNES talk commence! *waits impatiently for replies* ;D Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Molina00 on August 02, 2013, 08:05:42 PM Starfox is a great choice. I remember when I was a kid playing it at Target.
If you like fighting games look into Killer Instict, that one was a winner. Ken Griffey Junior Baseball was one of my favorite. I spent hours just changing the players names to real-life players. Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Prowl 1701 on August 02, 2013, 08:13:43 PM I love my Super NES games, I grew up with them, although these days I play them on a RetroN 3 clone console (plays NES, SNES, and Genesis games and even let you play with original SNES, NES, and Genesis controllers!) I strongly urge you to play the Mega Man X games, the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Super Metroid, they are some of my favorite games of all time!!! (And are usually considered such by game reviewers as well.)
Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Manroon on August 02, 2013, 08:17:32 PM Dude, you get a point for the Wookiee Cookies and your Sig. lol And thanks for the suggestions! I've actually never played any of the Starfox games, well... I played 64 in the store once or twice I think, but I never owned it or anything. Lots of people have told me it's perfect for me though, since I liked Rogue Squadron so much. :) I look forward to trying it out someday! Sports games... have never really been my thing, but Hockey and Tennis came in a good deal, and I do like Tennis games a bit. That one has just proven to be a blast so far. I suck at it, but it's a blast! rofl
Prowl, thanks for the input! I've seen those consoles, but the original was what was in front of me and it was a great bargain (about fifty bucks!), plus... I like original stuff. I'm the same way with my trains too. Nearly all of that collection is original pieces. I forgot about Mega Man... one of my first RP buddies was pretty into it. I may have to try the series out. My GF is a Zelda NUT, so that's a must. Super Metroid... I dunno. Certainly worth trying. I did enjoy Samus in Smash Bros! :D Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! My outlook was not quite so dim, but I liked the quote. Starfox 64 was another great game. I spend so much time just to trying to beat my own high scores on that. It was my brother and I's system and I did everything I could to keep him off the leaderboard. 8) I forgot about Mega Man. Mega Man X is a great game. Nice pickup on Mario Kart too. That's a blast if you can get a few people to play. Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Darth Kitsune on August 02, 2013, 08:33:32 PM I don't normally post in topics like this anywhere because I generally get a ton of flack, but I'm a huge Nintendo fan. It was the console I grew up with, starting with the NES and gradually working my way up. Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong....even newer series like Pikmin and such...I love it. I could do without the third party titles, though there are a handful of golden ones out there.
I own a Wii U, 3DS, GBA, N64, SNES, and an NES. I love them all. But out of all of them my favorite is exactly what this topic is about. My SNES is my pride and joy. I feel the SNES was the golden era of gaming. That's when it seems the ideas were extremely fresh and well thought out. Not to mention, most of the titles on it became cult classics. There is a small store down the road from my house that sells everything from Atari to Wii U (currently), so I always end up stopping by when I get a few extra bucks to buy a "new" title for my SNES. I can get a name-brand first party game for as low as $20 there, including some of the more rare and valuable ones like Chrono Trigger and Super Mario All Stars. Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Manroon on August 02, 2013, 08:40:20 PM Right there with you. In my early teens, my old man bought a Lethal Weapon 3 Pinball machine. Everyone except my mom, family friends included on occasion, were always shooting for the top slot. He was sooooo p.o.ed when I slipped in and stole the title on him before we sold it. *a moment of silence for the loss of a good machine* :'(
I figure I'll be doing lots of Mario Karting with friends, once I get the game down myself. A new Kart is always a challenge to learn, but I've never gone back a system before, only forwards. 16 bit gaming is pretty different for me. BTW... anyone have tips for beating the Magic Carpet level of Aladdin? Cause I totally suck at that one. Kitsune, that is awesome. I've been doing some window shopping online and found a couple places that seem to be pretty cheap, but most of the big titles like Mario and Zelda are expensive. I've seen people asking 20 or 30 bucks for the BOX to Link to the Past. o_0 Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Darth Kitsune on August 02, 2013, 08:50:49 PM If you're ever in the state of Alabama, check out a small town called Helena which is right off of Alabaster. The store is called Zone 1 Movies and Games, and the lady who runs it actually runs two stores, the other is usually headed by her husband somewhere else nearby. It's a small family owned business but they have the best stuff and are slowly and gradually outperforming Gamestop. XD
Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: kewlkev360 on August 02, 2013, 11:12:22 PM Oh my god, I had that Star Trek 25th Anniversary game for the NES back in the day. I remember playing it with my dad, and neither one of us could fight off the Romulans in the ship combat but my mom sure could. :)
I never had an SNES but played it a few times. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games were good as I recall. Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Darth_Phobius47 on August 03, 2013, 12:05:01 AM Dude awesome thread! I had a Super Nintendo when I was a kid! Just a few years before the N64 was released to be exact. My first game on my first console was MORTAL KOMBAT!!! (Cue awesome techno song) Lots of good memories.
Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Manroon on August 03, 2013, 05:10:11 PM Sooo pops stops off at the local non-Gamestop game store on the way home yesterday and floats me some green. Guess who's loving Super Star Wars and totally eating poodoo at Wing Commander? ;D

Post by: Darth Kitsune on August 04, 2013, 09:18:44 PM Yes but the good ol' brothers are still in action and thriving. Meanwhile, SEGA is thinking about retiring the blue blur because his fanbase is out of control and his production quality isn't making up for the loss of Yuji Naka as Sonic Team's original Director.
That old Live Action film is but a speck in history that was learned from and moved forward from. =P Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: TheHobbitofDune on August 04, 2013, 09:30:17 PM YEAH?!
WELL... YOUR FACE IS UGLY. ;D Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Darth Kitsune on August 05, 2013, 12:10:17 AM Oh god. I went to that store today near my house.
And they have a copy. Of. Chrono Trigger. For $80.00 NRFB. MONEY. WHY DO YOU EVADE ME!? Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Kresnik on August 05, 2013, 01:38:57 AM lol

Post by: Manroon on August 05, 2013, 05:27:18 PM Sooo.... super star wars didn't have a save feature, apparently. I am sensing that the early gamers were of a very hard core breed. So the training begins. *que Rocky Montage* 8)
Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: kewlkev360 on August 05, 2013, 05:32:03 PM Desert Strike Oh god, such memories! I had Desert, Jungle and Urban Strike for the Sega Genesis. I remember crashing into the Frigate on Desert Strike, and crashing into the Whit House on Jungle Strike. I was not a good pilot. ;D Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Prowl 1701 on August 05, 2013, 05:36:56 PM Most of the TMNT games on the NES and SNES are amazing. Avoid the first one like the plague, but the second, third and fourth ones are three of my favorite games!
Here's a funny video of the first game! ;D http://www.dorkly.com/video/25541/dorkly-bits-nes-ninja-turtles-theme-song Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Manroon on August 12, 2013, 08:54:26 PM My source of power has arrived! ;D

So the training begins. *que Rocky Montage* 8) This is true. We had to be hard core back then. In my day :D we were lucky if a game gave you a password. I can honestly say the old NES and SNES games were a lot harder than today's games. Die in an NES game, your dead. Die in a PS3 game, respawn at your last autosaved location. Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! Post by: Manroon on August 13, 2013, 09:27:12 PM Yeah.... I think this SNES stuff is gonna up my gaming for sure. lol
Back to Ranma, it is AWESOME! I'm really enjoying it, but I have to admit it's kicking my arse so far. I never really played fighting games... except Smash Bros... at all.... ever. lol I have the feeling it's gonna take me a couple days to get past Shampoo. :-\ Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread! "The hardest part in the entire game besides Dracula is the hall right before the Grim Reaper. You have Medusa heads coming at you from both directions, and two knights throwing axes at two different altitudes! I mean, look at the pattern going on here! Anything that hits you drains a quarter of your health, so that means four hits and you're dead! Oh, but the knights? The knights take nine hits. NINE *bleeping* hits! You can't even concentrate on attacking them because you're too busy dodging Medusas. But you can't dodge the Medusas because you're too busy dodging the axes. But you can't dodge the axes because you're trying to hit the knight. But you can't hit the knight because the game's driving you *bleeping* crazy! It's like a test! It's a test to the *bleep*." ^And that sums up the insanity that is old NES and SNES games :D Title: Re: The Super Nintendo Super Thread!
