Title: Possible Mac Compatibility Solution for Obsidian Soundboard Interface
Post by: tiger salamander on June 12, 2011, 04:47:42 PM
Here's a possible solution for the Mac users out there. Codeweaver's Crossover seems promising. I've been using it to run unsupported windows exectables such as redsn0w, blackra1n and greenpois0n and rainsmmsmaker to unlock iphones and psp's. It seems to work and is easy to use. I just ordered a consular with obsidian sound so I cannot verify that particular executable will work until I receive it.

Is there a way I can get the obsidian soundboard interface so I can test this?

I'm sure the Mac users probably heard of this already but here's the link to codeweavers: www.codeweavers.com (http://www.codeweavers.com)

The crossover trial is free but only lasts 30 days.

I'd like to here of any success stories with wine or parallels as I have not ever tried either of those.

As, a mac user, I agree !!!!!!
But, is the interface Open Source ? In order to recode it for mac...

My sense is that I don't think the soundboard interface is open source.  I'll have to wait until I get my order to see if it runs in crossover. I have my fingers crossed because I've been able to run obscure and unsupported .exe files.

I am assuming of course that if I were to connect an obsidian via USB to a Macbook it would be read as an external memory device (like a drive or memory card) and that I would be able to see all the contents in the obsidians memory. All we need is the .exe and execute it under wine, crossover or whatever.

By the looks of the video demo of the obsidian, it looks like the soundboard interface self launches when connected to a PC's USB.

Again, I'll have to wait for my order and see. I've re-thought my initial question on asking for the executable. It's out of line and I'm sure it's something proprietary that Novastar would'nt want us poking around.  Let's just be thankful that this sound option is available at a great price.

If we can run the interface under wine, crossover, etc... GREAT. If not, then it's not the end of the world. There are other options such as dual booting into windows (if one has that resource) or using a friend's pc.

Once I get my order, interfacing will be second thing I do (1st will be swinging the saber around and striking some targets). I'll post again with results unless someone else beats me to the punch.

I am able to open the Obsidian Launcher using a wine bottler application (Codeweaver's Crossover) but that's about it.  My new Obsidian sound saber is due to arrive next week so there's not much else to do with the launcher until then. The program knows I don't have an obsidian attached so I can only run it in offline mode. This is no guarantee that it will work with a saber attached.  I'll find out next week.

@Darth Wraith : Actually, there IS a right click on every Apple mouse... But I do know that we, noble mac users, are Much MORE awesome than lots of PC peasants, except the ones running some Open Source OS...
"To work, there is Mac. For the rest, there is Wine !"
The only problem we do have is about FU***** PC coders that don't think about their lords : us. So, from time to time, we encounter issues like this. But its only a little problem that will be solved when Steve wille rule the world, helped by his glorious army of Mac Users carrying UltraSabers !!! Thanks Ultra providing us Weapons such as yours in order to rule the galaxy, in the name of the Apple !

(Joking ? Maybe a little bit, that's all !)

But I can forgive you the mistake about the right click : before 2006, Mac's weren't using these ones... (such a pain) But now, event on the macbooks touch-sensitive (and awesome) trackpads, there is an accurate right click (it just has to be activated in the System Preferences, and some people don't know about this)

(and don't tell them that I can be a Sith, you would ruin my cover !)

The real test is to see if the Apple USB HID API will recognize the Obsidian (it should).  If it does, then the wine bottler application will work without issue.  Let me know how it goes.  I don't have a Mac and I won't be at Yoda's to test until next weekend.

FYI, users have already achieved success configuring Obsidian on a Mac with Bootcamp.

My Consular arrives tomorrow according to the UPS tracking, I'll post whether or not the wine bottler works.  I'm hoping it will.  It's an intel based mac so if wine does'nt work  I'll have to obtain a windows OS from someone and go through boot camp. It will still be worth the effort. Some of those fonts Novastar's CD compendium are amazing.

Received my Obsidian Consular today. This is a great saber and soundboard. It's LOUD.  I think I want to upgrade my other sabers to this sound board.
For me, unfortunately the crossover wine bottler does NOT work.  Although I can run the GUI, the USB connection is not detected. I might try mucking around with another wine bottler someday. For now I'll get XP and use bootcamp.

I'm looking into getting an obsidian soundboard and I'm posting this from my iPad 2.  I would be seriously thrilled if that were possible.
