Title: Am I doing it wrong?
Post by: AerykGunn on June 30, 2011, 01:04:43 AM
Okay so I just got my new Dark Initiate V2, and it's got a little bit of paint missing I think but that doesn't bother me. At the bottom of the blade, the film on the inside is wrinkled. I've read you have to beat it over an arm chair or something to let it straighten out... now.. It won't straighten out and I've hit a cushion till my arm is swore. Do I have to take the blade out and hit it where it's open? or keep it in the hilt? or what?

Yeah, I took the blade out when I did this. You should look in the bottom to see if the film has come out of the glue. If this is the case, then you might have to carefully cut the glue away and redo it.

this happened to me once and i kept the blade in the hilt and beat the snot out of my couch. my wife looked at me and asked me what the hell i was doing. eventually the film straightened out after about five minutes of doing this.

I'll try both :) thanks!

Also, my Catalyst.. the film does something weird. If I hit something with the catalyst or push it against something, the film in the blade shows white but doesn't stay like that. Is it just stress on it? My initiate doesn't do that.

That's normal, especially for a midgrade blade. It's just the film wrinkling from the blade bending.

I still haven't been able to get it to straighten out and i've dueled with it (which btw using a short blade against a normal is HARD), and hit it on lots of stuff and it  won't straighten out hmm

I have a UEHG blades, and its the same with the film. I can only pick up the line where it was cut, going along the blade, and when i bend it a little, it shows wierd paterens as it "sticks" to the inside if the blade, but thats all normal i guess. Hae no issues with it so far (knocks in wood)

Did you try removing the blade and just look at the glue? If it's loose you will have to re do it, and beating your couch probably will not work :)

If you don't mind shortening your blade, just use a pipe or pvc cutter and cut off at the bottom above where its glued...   Then just pull your film out, and it should straighten up...  Simply re-insert it, and hot glue it back in...  Just make sure you don't get any dirt/dust/hair on the film...  It'll show when your blade is lit...

Shouldn't even need to shorten the blade. Carefully use an exacto knife to cut out the glue at the bottom of the blade, pull the film out, unroll / reroll it, slide it back in, carefully re hot glue it in. I had ripples in my DSI's UEHG blade that couch sabering didn't fix. Doing this fixed it fine.

Well to be honest, I was going to shorten the blade even more for a project. As short as it's going to be, it might not even matter. But thanks guys! :)

What would be the best and make the smoothest cut? pipe or pvc cutter?

I'd suggest the pipe cutter.

I'd suggest the pipe cutter.

I have to agree.  The pipe cutter should be much easier and nicer to use.

A third vote for the pipe cutter.

4th for the pipe cutter.  The PVC cutter has a tendency to bend the blade where it is cutting it, which will probably make your cut mark slanted, and not even all the way across the blade.

Alright well I think i'm going with a pipe cutter and luckily my dad has one. :) thanks guys! now the film on the inside, i have to re-glue it yes? because it won't stay otherwise? will it get wrinkled when I cut it or what?

You will have to reglue it yes.  Some hot glue ought to do it.  I suppose it could get wrinkled but I have a few blades that came wrinkled.  Doesn't make a huge difference.  Noticeable but not awful.

My only fear is, as short as I want the blade, I don't want it to be TOO wrinkled but... hot glue eh? hmm I heard that maybe gorilla glue would work too?

Hot glue should work. I wouldn't recommend using Gorilla Glue, in case you need to get the glue off to get the "snake pattern" out.
