Title: Is Black possible with the Emerald Sabers?
Post by: ShadowVolker on December 01, 2013, 08:55:57 PM
Hey there everyone.
Thinking about treating myself to getting a saber (or two for a double-bladed) for christmas this year.
I've always been a fan for the idea of a black lightsaber, but never thought I'd have the chance to get one, as most sites only have certain colors you can pick from. Then I came across the "emerald sabers" and it got me thinking it might be possible.
I was wondering if anyone has tried this already (and by this I mean turning all the colors to the lowest side on the slider, which should produce black), and if so how well it looks.

Any info on the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

You wouldn't be able to produce a black blade.  Even with the new Emerald Driver, Turning all of the colors on a very low setting would only give you just that.  A dimmed down version of all the colors mixed(A slightly blueish pinkish white).  Black is an absence of color so no matter what you do regarding the LED, you won't achieve a black blade.

Ah, that is quite disappointing, but I suppose I shouldn't be too shocked.
I guess I got my hopes up because one of the presets in the video showing off the driver software was black iirc.

Anyway, thanks for the info!

I think that's just the standard colours you get as presets in MS Paint etc.

Someone did show a custom build recently that was meant to resemble the Mandalorian sword used in the Clone Wars cartoon... Found it: http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=17289.0 (http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=17289.0)

The blade actually comes up red, but that may just be the LED used. Look into it, and see if that's what you're after, but it's not something US offer themselves.

You can't have a black lightsaber blade. It isn't possible simply due to the properties of light. Black, as stated, is the absence of color and light. And I hate to sound kind of mean, but that thought about turning the sliders all the way down to produce a black blade is kind of a concrete thought process.

Okay so I have a theory that I will be testing on Thurs that may solve the problem of not having a black blade. Now to let everyone know only the core of the blade will be black there will still be a LED light around the core that will shine what ever color you LED is. To clear the air it is impossible to have a black LED there would be no light. This would be the closest thing to a black blade I will share my results once my tests are done.

That would have been my suggestion. Try to make the black as matte as possible that way it doesn't take up the colour of the LEDs.

(please post pics; don't care if it doesn't work well - I will still applaud your effort)

The Sith do not post failings. If my test fails I'll be destroying the blade. My theory sounds like it will work but I wont know for sure til Thurs when my package from US arrives.

True Sith are above arrogance; I think you're taking your role of 'bad guy' a little too seriously

You can't have a black lightsaber blade. ...

I have to disagree; that 'Starkiller-Black-Blade' seems to be possible.

A guy called Turgon (he's on one of the other forums) is experimenting with several layers of 'LCD polarising filters' (currently wrapped around the blade).
It's not perfect yet, but already looks intriguing:

You can't have a light that is Black however. You can create the illusion of a black-cored lightsaber blade, but you can't actually have an LED that gives off a black light. Black is the absence of color and light. The only way to achieve a "Black" blade is to fashion some sort of solid core blade for the prop or something similar. When I said you can't have a black blade, I meant that in the term of science and how light behaves and works, and what the shade Black actually is. >_>

That's true ;)
But when someone talks about 'black lightsaber', usually that TFU-version with black core is meant, so I tend to cringe just a little and afterwards point them to that experimental stuff ;)

SO as promised I tested my theory and it was a failure. I tried dripping pant in and just moving it around the wrap inside. Bad thing is the wrap is not sealed at the top near the tip so the paint filled and started backing up behind the wrap on the blade. So to save the blade itself I destroyed just the wrap and saved the blade. So I am joining the party of it's not possible to make a Black Blade. On the up side I heard from Emory today and my Dark Shock was delivered to them for repair and I'll have it back soon. I can't wait I miss my saber.

You can totally have a black blade! It just won't emanate light as we expect from lightsabers. But hell, you could always paint your blade jet black, maybe sand it down so you can barely see the light behind it.

These topics amuse me as it is a simple concept of the light spectrum ... You can't have total darkness as a measurement of light ...

A "black novelty  light " is just purple

technically, all you need is some way of having a blade black when you look at it straight, but lit up round the edges.
not sure how you'd do it, but there's probably a way. something to do with angles and stuff.
