Title: Jedi belt build
Post by: Aurick on April 09, 2014, 10:29:27 AM
Hey guys started my jedi belt yesterday. I'll get pics up of this completely custom build that I'm doing. Bought all the leather and doing all the work myself. Hope you'll enjoy it... Pics soon I promise!

Ok guys here's a lil teaser, it's my mock up of the finished product. Went for a different style "buckle" as you can see and my "latching" system is a lil different then most I think. Well enjoy! Should be finished with the whole thing here in a day or so :D

Alright here's some pics of the belt. I started with just a rough idea how I was going to accomplish it. I changed the buckle design numerous times and opted for just a simple brass ring, different than most yet not a truly out there design. I got the button studs from a store on ebay, as getting them from tandy would have been WAY to expensive! If any one has any questions on construction feel free to ask and give feedback guys I may make some more to potentially start an etsy page. I had a blast making this belt and IMO it is equal to those that can be bought from a "professional". Thanks and here's all the pics I got :)

Tomorrow night I'll be suiting up in full costume to show the belt and the costume in all it's glory, so more pics tomorrow night hopefully!!

Nice. I actually like the buckle. I might build a belt myself just with two of those brass things though. Not really sure what they are. Can they be found at say Jo-Ann's?

The buckle? Yeah I'm sure at any hobby or fabric store you could find comparable rings.

How do u connect the belt?

That looks really good. I like your no-buckle buckle system.

Just a suggestion....try putting some neutral shoe polish on it. A can of Kiwi neutral polish is cheap and will go a long way to even out the dye job and "finish" the leather so it has a better chance of not rubbing off on your clothes.

I use the neutral shoe polish trick on all of my leather and it has never failed me. It protects and give a nice luster.

Nice job. I hope I can see it in real life at C2E2  ;)

Point.

Hey guys the belt latches with the three studs pictured below

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a483/fiegen_fam85/imagejpg4_zps09745b80.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/fiegen_fam85/media/imagejpg4_zps09745b80.jpg.html)

The smaller belt latches around just in the back as opposed to a normal belt latching in the front.

I used feibings leather dye and Eco flo satin finish and Bicks leather conditioner. The finish is for the reason of keeping the color on the leather. I'll look into the kiwi polish though.

I'll get a better picture of the latching system ASAP. Thanks for the feedback guys!!

Edit: I took a picture of the latching system pic below.

Glad to hear you have some finishing product on there. At this point, the Kiwi would not be real necessary but will help keep the leather from being scratched by say......a saber hilt.

Love the latching system. Great idea.

Nice job all around.

Starting phase 2 today. I realized hat the belt is great but I need pouches so I started work on three pouches for my belt and I did a mock up of one of them for proof of concept here's the pic.

Alright had a good build day got two of the three pouches finished, and the last one just needs to be stitched up and it'll be finished! This build has been very satisfying and a good confidence builder for my ability with leathercraft. I learned a lot and I can't wait to start another project!!! Enjoy the pics!

Sweet build Aurick!

I hope you don't mind, but I am once again inspired by you and may use your belt build for a reference to my own build that I would like to do soon.  I especially like what you did with the pouches.  I personally like to have pouches that are both consistent with the Star Wars universe and are fully functional and of quality, particularly to actually hold my belongings at conventions, events, and charities.
You wouldn't happen to have any patterns you based it off of by any chance or was it pretty much in the head?

Waxman, I have a little sketch of my plans but I just used a carpenters square for "mapping" out on my leather what I wanted to cut. Tomorrow maybe I'll get a pic up, been a long day today and I'm just not up for finding it at the moment. But please be inspired and take what you can from my work! Plagiarism is the highest form of flattery! Oh I can say one thing that helped out tremendously was watching as many tutorials from tandy leather website as I could. I'll follow up tomorrow for sure! Thank you all

I bought I from my friendly neighborhood tandy leather factory shop. They were very helpful in getting me back up to speed on my rusty leathercraft skills. A bit expensive but worth it for the help and quality of products.

Alright Waxman, sorry I didn't get this up yesterday, I had a surprise visit to the ER. I'm fine now so here we go. These aren't great plans and they were at times modified on the fly but this is what I started with.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a483/fiegen_fam85/imagejpg1_zpsfa095584.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/fiegen_fam85/media/imagejpg1_zpsfa095584.jpg.html)

I marked the different sections I was to cut A1 B1 C1, then A2 B2 C2. That may help in deciphering my chicken scratch. Hope it helps and any more help I can give let me know! MTFBWY All.

Well that's the best way to learn! The folks at tandy leather factory are great and very helpful! Also their website has a lot of great how to videos to get you started as well. I got a lot of compliments at c2e2 this past weekend, which is a great feeling because it meant I actually made it look as professionally done as possible! It's great when people are like "where did you buy that belt man!?" And I'm all like " I made it with my own two hands!!" Hope I've inspired some do it yourselfers out there!

Your belt turned out very nice. I like how you used the studs in the back as well. When I made mine I used a regular buckle in the back, and a side fastening buckle in the front, so I have two ways to take the belt on.

Nice finished belt. Can I find the studs and buckle at say hobby lobby? I'm going to see about making my own belt here soon. Only hard part is going to figure out getting the studs on, buckle, smaller part of the belt, and actually putting the belt on. Unless you put a good amount of Velcro in the middle of the back. A small tutorial would be nice if possible.

Very true, I will work on making a post belt tutorial as I don't have the funds to build a new one. The studs and my ring buckle were bought separately. The studs were bought from a Chinese company off of ebay, which is way cheaper than buying them in the states. The ring was bought at tandy leather shop as well as the leather and dye for the leather. When I get a chance I'll make that tutorial and post it in a new thread. If whitmers would make a little tutorial as well in the thread then we will have both methods of creating our belts. Ps nice job whitmers!! Point for your belt!!

Army surplus stores are a great place to get leather pouches that are nice and weathered. We have one here in Ogden that has a massive selection of antique military gear. Used some for a Luke Skywalker costume a few years ago.
Great job! Points for yoo!
