Title: Junior Jedi with Ultra Sabers
Post by: chicago.jedi on April 19, 2014, 12:06:16 AM
I just finished Jedi costumes for my kids. They out grew the other ones I made for them but have really taken a liking to Star Wars (daddy is smiling ear to ear). The Rebel Legion and 501 groups in my area host a big event in the summer that draws in hundreds of spectators. The boys had a blast last year so I decided to make nice Jedi outfits for them this year.

They each picked out the colors of their outfits themselves, I did all of the sewing. They also picked the Ultra Saber blade colors themselves. Interesting enough, the colors each chose very much reflect their personalities.

Enjoy...

Here is a close up of the belts I made them. They are just faux leather and cotton strap but I think they work well to give the proper impression...

Thanks for all of the kind words. The boys are very proud of their outfits.

Now I just need to find some kind of boots....and I got talked into making cloaks, too. A father's work is never done....but it is all worth it. :)

For the boots, you might consider leather spats/gaiters that could fit over comfy shoes - and stretch to grow as the youngsters do.

+1 on this suggestion. I had an army uniform when I was a little fella that did the boots this way.

Or maybe try Boot Barn if you have one near you. I'm sure they have Star Wars looking boots. I'm liking the darker brown themed costume. That's a cool idea for a brother saber theme type thing.

Very nice costumes!

For the boots, you could just make leather boot covers, and put them over a pair of rubber rain boots. Those are usually pretty cheap, so it won't be too much of a loss when you need to buy them new ones next year, when they inevitably grow out of them. And they'll be able to tuck the pants in for a more authentic look than just covers over sneakers or something.

I was wondering as well what materials did you use for everything and when you get to the robe eventually? Thanks. I still plan to make my own Jedi costume as well eventually. =]

The tunics, tabbards, and obi are all made of cotton broadcloth.  Since they might get two years out of these outfits if I am lucky (I did make them with extra in the sleeves and hem to let out as they grow) I went with something cheap.

I will probably use cotton flannel for the cloaks since it is also cheap but has a little texture to it that will set the cloaks apart from the rest.

Also for any interested, the tunics are made with a karate gi pattern from McCalls.

Ok, totally complete......

(http://i1358.photobucket.com/albums/q763/tcvcj3106/001_zpse660ba9b.jpg) (http://s1358.photobucket.com/user/tcvcj3106/media/001_zpse660ba9b.jpg.html)

The cloaks are cotton flannel. They are made with a pattern that is more like a Little Red Riding Hood style hooded cape but I modified it to be longer and have a fuller, more Jedi-like, hood.

The boots are rubber rain boots. I thought about the spat style boots but decided against it. Star Wars costumes always look utility and practical to me. If push comes to shove, I think a non-cannon yet real and practical looking boot looks better than a fake canon looking boot. This is just my opinion. The boots will also be useful for helping out in the yard or rainy days.

And of course, boys must be boys......

Enjoy the pics.

May the 4th be with you.

:o so freaking awesomely cute. You get a point. I wish I could give you a bunch in a row, but it doesn't work like that.
