Title: Cloak Dying Strategies?
Post by: jaywarmann on May 21, 2014, 05:30:46 AM
Greetings all. I recently became the proud owner of a jedi cloak! Unfortunately the cloak is too light of a brown for my taste and I was wondering if anyone had some strategies for cheap ways to die it darker. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry I do not other than purchasing dye tablets and following the directions on them.  When I read your title, I thought you meant playing dead or getting killed without looking cheesy on stage.

What is your cloak made from?  If it is cotton, you can use Rit dyes.  If it is wool, you will have to use an acid dye, available from either Jacquard or Dharma Trading.  Either way, you are going to need a container large enough to allow the cloak/robe to move freely in the dye bath.  If your cloak is cotton, you can probably do the dyeing in your bathtub.  If it is wool, you may have difficulty getting a pot large enough to hold the cloak.

If the cloak is made of a mixed cotton/polyester, you are going to have quite a bit of difficulty, as dyes for cotton (Rit for example), won't properly dye polyester - it will only tint the polyester.

Good luck!

Thanks guys! I will look into both options. I am also planning on taking it to my tailor to hem it so I can also ask her for suggestions.
