Title: Pic request - Mantis Staff? Post by: LeoninJesterXII on July 29, 2014, 08:42:26 PM Anybody gone full splurge and done this yet?
Title: Re: Pic request - Mantis Staff? Post by: Ziran Le on July 29, 2014, 08:44:49 PM Jester, do you mean a double Mantis staff, with 2 blades? Since this hilt has only been available for about a week (or less?) I haven't seen a customer doing this, but Deep (Emory from US) posted pics from the shop where he did this. You can find them on the "Announcements" thread about the release of the saber, I believe.
Pretty wild! Title: Re: Pic request - Mantis Staff? Post by: James Casey on July 30, 2014, 11:13:39 AM Someone in the Raffle thread said they'd bought two Mantises, but I guess they don't have them yet.
Deep's post: With Black Coupler with Vents and O-Ring to adjust timing to line them up (easy) (http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/673/jGa3yy.jpg) Title: Re: Pic request - Mantis Staff? Post by: magik0012 on August 04, 2014, 10:34:31 PM For some reason, when I first pictured a double-Mantis staff, I thought it would have both blades bending the same direction.. so.. sorta "C" shaped.. but that would probably be crazy.

Makes me think of that weapon the Klingons use in Star Trek (I can't spell it). Title: Re: Pic request - Mantis Staff? Post by: James Casey on August 05, 2014, 12:13:22 PM With an adjustable coupler, that'd definitely be possible. With the standard couplers I suspect you'd have trouble getting them lined up right - without O-rings, at least.
Title: Re: Pic request - Mantis Staff? Post by: Karmack on August 05, 2014, 03:15:06 PM Bat'Leth Yeah. That was my idea for the Mantis - bend them forward and make a Bat'Leth out of them. The real killer mod would be to find a way to mount a blade across the inner curve to make a nearly continuous blade. That would be truly epic. If I can figure that out, I will have a compelling reason to get a pair of these. :-) Title: Re: Pic request - Mantis Staff? Post by: LeoninJesterXII on August 06, 2014, 03:58:12 AM Yeah. Title: Re: Pic request - Mantis Staff? Post by: Karmack on August 06, 2014, 05:42:50 PM What I have in mind is a secondary emitter mounted about where the primary one is, just deep enough to hold the LED and mount a blade. Both hilts would have one with a single tube. (Cut off the tip and trim a blade to length for this)
The LED would have to be wired in for power in each hilt. Maybe with a secondary battery pack. Getting really crowded in there... The central tube would be lit from both sides, which could be interesting. The effect would be a nearly continuous blade in the arc of the Mantis with a grip area behind the blade. It would be superior to a normal staff because you could actually center-block with it as well as do straight thrusting attacks. Also would be able to catch an opponent's blade on the center and then rotate around it, striking with one end or the other while continuing the parry. Dang it! The more I think about it the more I really want to work this up... Title: Re: Pic request - Mantis Staff? The more I think about it the more I really want to work this up... I'd buy some electronics sets and some PVC to try this. I wouldn't use $180 sabers on an extremely iffy experiment. Also, normal blade film would not be good for the arced blade. You would need a side-projecting fiber-optic film. The blade film won't carry the light in an arc. Title: Re: Pic request - Mantis Staff? Post by: Karmack on August 07, 2014, 07:42:11 PM Sorry, Leonin, I'm not making myself clear.
The blades would be straight. The two blades on each side of the Mantis with a single straight blade between the emitters across the inner arc of the staff. I'll have to draw a diagram or something... I honestly don't think it would be to hard to make. There are plenty of holes in the emitter to run wires through and already tapped for brackets. You'd just need to create the central blade "holder" with one or two LEDs to light it and trim a spare blade to fit. The only other fabrication would be mounting and then a little engineering to wire them into power. Power for the extra LEDs would be the biggest concern, but as I said it would be possible to mount an extra battery pack if you don't have sound or emerald onboard... I would still do it with PVC to start. It would be easier and less expensive if it goes to shtak. Title: Re: Pic request - Mantis Staff? Post by: OISIN NOM on August 10, 2014, 10:44:20 AM If you curved them like a C and turned them around it would look like a bow for shooting arrows. I am not sure that would be a good look.
