Title: First Saber - Guardian in GB with Obsidian Post by: Kyyanno on October 22, 2014, 10:33:56 AM My goodness, it felt like this day would never get here - 6 days following parcel tracking can seem like an eternity!
(Firstly, apologies for photo quality, I'm using the camera on my S3 to take these, hope to borrow a friends decent camera shortly!) Like most of you, I stumbled across Ultrasabers in the search for a Saber that is not only beautiful to look at, but amazing to wield, and wield them you can! I've only held plastic replicas until this morning, when this arrived (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v716/Kyyanno/Saber/20141022_110150.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Kyyanno/media/Saber/20141022_110150.jpg.html) Obviously, it was in a brown box, but you don't need to see that! I was very impressed with how well wrapped and protected the saber and its various chargers were - I opted for the recharge point, fast charger and a separate charger for the batteries themselves as well, taking advantage of the Halloween deals (and why not?!). Emory sure knows how to make sure these things arrive in one piece. Tearing off (well, carefully removing, but the enthusiasm was there!) the protective wrapping, I was met with the wondrous sight of my very first UltraSaber, Guardian in GB (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v716/Kyyanno/Saber/20141022_110313.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Kyyanno/media/Saber/20141022_110313.jpg.html) I had no idea just how weighty it was going to be - you can feel the heft of the hilt when you pick it up, it's certainly made to be durable - I'm definitely considering steel-toe shoes for when I swing it around XD Of course, the first thing I had to do was press that button (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v716/Kyyanno/Saber/20141022_110416.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Kyyanno/media/Saber/20141022_110416.jpg.html) What a colour, the camera I used just can't do it justice - Guardian Blue is a colour that everyone should have on at least one Saber in their collection, it's an amazing hue. I can't wait to see it at night! The blade illuminates all the way from the hilt to the tip and right to the edges, much MUCH better than any other toy or replica I've seen in person so far. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v716/Kyyanno/Saber/20141022_110435.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Kyyanno/media/Saber/20141022_110435.jpg.html) The finish and construction is fantastic, US should be very proud of what they make. I'm glad I went for the standard finish, I just love the metallic steel colour (yes, I know it's aluminium!) contrasting against the black. The detail machined into the hilt and the emitter really makes this so much worth the extra over some other replicas out there! The activation switch is easy enough to press, but not too easy that you switch it on accidentally or hit the lockup inadvertantly. The silver FoC looks great btw, I was unsure exactly what to go for (I couldn't afford an Emerald this time around), but against the blue of the blade it's a cracking choice. The Flash on lockup could be a bit more randomised timewise, but I'm sure there's a setting for that somewhere on the board (which I don't want to go fiddling with just yet). The sound is spot on, brilliantly clear from the pommel, and sounds great when you put the blade through its paces (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v716/Kyyanno/Saber/20141022_110447.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Kyyanno/media/Saber/20141022_110447.jpg.html) The recharge point sits well within the body of the hilt, it doesn't feel uncomfortable when you hold it and blends in quite nicely thanks to the design - it took me a few moments to realise that's what it was XD Hopefully I'll get a video review made up at some point when I have a friend and capable camera to hand, for now though I'm off to save the galaxy.....I mean, admire my newest acquisition, the first of many more to come, I'm sure! Title: Re: First Saber - Guardian in GB with Obsidian Post by: Racona Nova on October 22, 2014, 04:23:09 PM Nice review, and a great saber :D Always good to see a canon hilt in canon colour, although it looks cool in other colours as well!
What exactly do you mean by a "more randomised" lockup flash? You can set how fast it flashes (in milliseconds) and how sensitive the saber reacts on impacts, but that's it regarding the Flash on Clash feature. Title: Re: First Saber - Guardian in GB with Obsidian Post by: Kyyanno on October 22, 2014, 04:32:34 PM Thanks - I've always wanted one that's "as seen on screen" so to speak, and I just love the design of the Guardian to bits, so I guess it had to be that one for me. I imagine though that yes, it looks great in pretty much any colour! My next one will be something a bit lighter though, the weight is certainly one thing that's noticeable when holding this Saber for a while so I'm probably going to get a lighter hilt to practice swings and combat with, who knows what colour yet :)
By "randomised" it's more that I can see the flash is a regular time period, so either speeding it up or slowing down will still have a patterned look to it (to me anyway). What I'd like is a selection of different flash time periods that switch at random, giving more of an unpredictable arcing effect. It may be possible, I don't know as I haven't plugged it in to the PC yet to see what I can do with the Obsidian board, I'll get around to that at some point soon I'm sure. As for the sensitivity, it seems pretty good to me, I haven't had much chance to really swing it about yet! (low ceilings XD ) I'm already looking through the US catalogue again....HALP! XD Title: Re: First Saber - Guardian in GB with Obsidian Post by: Racona Nova on October 22, 2014, 04:42:58 PM I'd vote for a Consular or an Archon v2.1 in CG for practice and combat! Both are light, and great to wield!
Regarding the Flash on Clash, I have to say that setting up and randomly switching between different time periods is not possible with the current Obsidian soundboard. You can only have that patterned look so far. It may change in the future, though. Many users want a soundboard that can hold several soundfonts at once to switch between, so maybe it's also possible to expand this to different flash time settings which are chosen randomly by the board. Title: Re: First Saber - Guardian in GB with Obsidian Post by: Kyyanno on October 22, 2014, 04:53:18 PM It was a close decision between the Guardian and the Consular for my first choice actually, so a Consular as a second saber wouldn't be a bad option - I'll just have to check the weights against other models, though I don't see them on the website. Any idea how much lighter the Consular is than the Guardian?
Tbh I'm just soooo happy with the Saber that the lockup flash timing is a non-issue, more of a "would be nice but not necessary" thing :D Title: Re: First Saber - Guardian in GB with Obsidian Post by: Racona Nova on October 22, 2014, 05:10:26 PM Funnily enough, I was lucky and could test both sabers because my neighbours have them :D I don't have the exact weights, but the Consular is probably between 30% and 35% lighter than the Guardian - at least it feels like that ;D
Yeah, the weights aren't annotated on the website, maybe US changes that in the future. It would make decisions and comparisons much easier. Title: Re: First Saber - Guardian in GB with Obsidian Post by: Zren Tobas on October 22, 2014, 06:04:06 PM Very nice saber. I'm an Obi-wan fan so. And for a sound font, you can always put the Episode I Obi-Qui on, has Obi-wan power ons and such, cool font especially if your an Obi-wan fan. =] Just thought I'd throw that out for you. You gotta download that winrar thing though in order to download different fonts which I couldn't point out to you on that but its on the Obsidian page somewhere. Did you go fast charge?
Title: Re: First Saber - Guardian in GB with Obsidian Post by: Kyyanno on October 22, 2014, 06:20:57 PM I'll have to have a look at that - I've got various unzip programs so that won't be a problem :) Thanks for the heads-up about it, I've got a few days off now so plenty of time to go browsing sound fonts 8)
Yes, I went for the fast charge option, had to make the most of the Halloween deals and a good exchange rate (I'm in the UK). The charge port sits so well in the hilt that I didn't realise it was not just another decorative part at first :P Title: Re: First Saber - Guardian in GB with Obsidian Post by: Prowl 1701 on October 23, 2014, 12:59:24 AM Congrats on the Guardian, it's a great saber from what I've heard. Hope you do get a video review up! :)
