Title: Prophecy Adegan Silver Review + Lee Filters!
Post by: RLYHYPERGUY on August 13, 2011, 10:05:12 PM
I recently (last month actually) got myself a Prophecy in Adegan Silver. This is my review of my new toy, including Lee Filters! The whole reason I got this saber was to replace my broken Dominix V1 (actually half of a phantom initiate V1), and this beast surpasses it in every category! I also lucked out with reward points and the sale so I was able to get it for almost 50% off! I love this thing!

The Hilt:
To put it simply: this thing is awesome. Not only is it gorgeous, but it’s durable also. The grip is extremely comfortable and the balance is great (right above the smaller brass screw cover with a 32” mid grade.) The brass screw covers are a really nice touch, although the fact that only one of them actually retains the blade can be confusing. For a while I was tightening both screws (with two different hex wrenches) until I saw the recent video on YouTube that explains how to remove blades. Apparently the smaller screw is only for decoration. Usually this would upset me because practicality is my number one priority, but I actually do like the look of it, even though I wouldn’t care if I lost it. The Covertec knob is, to be frank, annoying. I see how it can be cool to wear your saber on your belt, but the knob makes the bottom grip especially uncomfortable. I removed mine as soon as I could (although I put it back on for the pictures)! Another complaint I have concerns the emitter shroud: it’s pretty sharp! I would be careful with it! One thing I love about this hilt though is how solid it feels. The battery pack doesn’t rattle around which is a huge relief! I’ve been stuffing electrical tape in my other sabers to keep it in place! Overall, this is an incredible hilt with a few minor complaints. But then again, nothing is completely perfect!

Oh, and I especially love the accent holes on the hilt!

Color/Brightness:
I chose Adegan Silver as my color. It seems to be an underrated color though… I don’t understand why! It’s incredibly unique and you also get to change the color with filters! This is a much cheaper option than Quick Disconnects or RGB (although those do seem frickin’ sweet)! The discs that come with the saber aren’t great, but if you get some Lee Filters you’ll have a wide range of incredible colors! Except for red though, that’s the only color you can’t get. The only other weakness with filters though is brightness. With most the saber is still very bright, but with darker colors it becomes dimmer. This doesn’t bother me personally, but it might bother others. Speaking of brightness, this thing could blind a small chipmunk or rodent! In other words, it’s pretty freaking bright.

Combat:
This saber is very versatile when it comes to combat, although it is better for some forms than others. The forms I would say that it is best for are Shii-Cho, Ataru, and Djem So. Forms like Makashi and Soresu may suffer though. The hilt doesn’t feel very comfortable to me with one hand, and holding it in a reverse grip is… weird. It can be done, but it’s just, well, weird. It doesn’t handle Soresu very well though because you have to be able to maneuver the saber quickly to block attacks but in some positions, such as blocking strikes aimed at the legs, it can feel very awkward. It’s not the fastest saber, but it is durable and it will definitely not fly out of your hands! Also, this saber is very good for spinning due to the grip towards the emitter.

Filters:
This has become an unpopular color-changing method to use recently, but it is the cheapest way! Make sure you use Lee Filters though, as they have the best color quality and brightness. I got my swatch book for 5 dollars somewhere online, but I’ve heard that you can get them for free. The annoying thing about these filters though is that you have to cut them yourself and getting the right size and shape can be difficult. This is how I cut them:

Now on to the filter pictures! These are all done in a dark room (with trace amounts of light) with a 32” mid grade blade. When using filters make sure you use a standard edge blade! The UltraEdge tends to wash the colors out. These are all using Lee Filters with a mid grade standard edge blade.

No filters.

I can't remember what this one is called but it's a light blue filter that makes the color more silver-y.

Oklahoma Yellow - A very bright and vibrant yellow!

Deep Straw - A more golden yellow, almost amber.

Deep Golden Amber - A very nice orange.

I think this one is called Jade, but I'm not sure. It's still a nice green.

I think this is Forest Green. It's not as bright as the others, but I like it.

Peacock Blue - A stunning cyan!

Medium Blue-Green - This is pretty much self-explanatory. It's actually more green in real life (stupid camera.) It is a nice color though!

Bright Blue - The best blue filter for a Guardian!

I don't remember what this one is called because my sister picked it out lol. It's pink!

Magic Magenta - This makes a violet worthy of Master Windu.

Conclusion:
This saber is wonderful. It’s not my favorite out of my collection, but it is in a close second. Now for the pros and cons!

Pros: Durable
Solid
SHINY
Excellent Craftsmanship
Great Grip
Great Balance
Bright
Good Price (better when on sale  ;))

Cons: Sharp Emitter
Covertec Knob

For those of you who like number ratings, I give this a 9/10. Nothing is perfect, but this saber comes close!

And finally, a picture with the rest of my collection:
Note: The green sabers are both using an UltraEdge blade

Thanks for reading!

Great review, especially the parts regarding the Lee filters and the different forms that might and might not work with this saber!!

But you said that you get some basic color discs with the Adegan saber? Could you make a picture of those as I can't recall anyone ever showing those. So I thought you just got the Adegan Silver color and had to get discs elsewhere  :P

Anyways, great pictures too. The color filters look great and seem to offer a ton of variety. So while Adegan Silver may be the most underrated of the color choice, it sure seems to be the best on if you truly wish to create a unique saber!! ;D

Yeah Great review. Thanks for the info on the filters. Great way to personalize your saber.

I am getting a Adegan silver saber so thanks for the pictures! It looks cool! 8)

Danakar Endeel: The saber does come with discs supplied by US, but they're not that great. I will upload pictures for you though just as soon as my sister comes back from a party (she took the camera.) And yes it is the best color for personalizing your saber, especially when Lee filters are involved! There's a huge variety of colors to choose from! Just make sure you choose a good filter because some of them are kind of bland and dim. The specific ones I mentioned in the review are the best that I have found through research and experimentation.

Sephradragon: Great choice! Make sure you get Lee filters though!

Nice review, I like that you added the filters in. I think that's the way you go if you want to play around and find a unique color.

As requested by Danakar Endeel I am now posting pictures of the discs that US supplies with Adegan Silver sabers. The blades are mid grade standard edge.
Warning: These are not very high quality filters and also look slightly different on my camera. I'll note where.

Here are the discs:
Starting from the top right going counter-clockwise: Green, yellow, blue-green, blue, light blue, magenta, orange, amber, violet, red, pink, purple.

Green
(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/RLYHYPERGUY/crap%20discs/crapgreen.jpg?t=1313289631)
This is pretty accurate.

Yellow
(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/RLYHYPERGUY/crap%20discs/yellow.jpg?t=1313289765)
It looks worse in person lol.

Blue-Green
(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/RLYHYPERGUY/crap%20discs/blugreen.jpg?t=1313289681)
Pretty accurate.

Blue
(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/RLYHYPERGUY/crap%20discs/blue.jpg?t=1313289821)
This is also pretty accurate.

Light Blue
(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/RLYHYPERGUY/crap%20discs/lightblue.jpg?t=1313289879)
This is accurate! It actually has a similar effect to the light blue Lee filter. They both make the color more silver-y! I haven't decided which one I prefer though, which is actually quite surprising. So if you want a true silver saber then just order the color and pop the included light blue disc in! Get Lee filters also though if you want to fully enjoy the wonders of Adegan Silver.

Magenta
(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/RLYHYPERGUY/crap%20discs/magenta.jpg?t=1313290018)
Again, pretty accurate.

Purple
(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/RLYHYPERGUY/crap%20discs/purple.jpg?t=1313290058)
It's kind of ironic that the darkest disc becomes one of the lightest colors... on camera and in person.

Pink
(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/RLYHYPERGUY/crap%20discs/crappink.jpg?t=1313290122)
Accurate. Yes, it is a salmon pink in person.

Red
(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/RLYHYPERGUY/crap%20discs/red.jpg?t=1313290171)
This photo is NOT accurate. It's much pinker in person. Kind of like the magenta picture, just a bit darker.

Violet
(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/RLYHYPERGUY/crap%20discs/violet.jpg?t=1313290241)
Accurate.

Amber
(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/RLYHYPERGUY/crap%20discs/amber.jpg?t=1313290279)
I have NO idea what happened with this picture! In person it's kind of like the yellow disc, just a tad darker.

Orange
(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/RLYHYPERGUY/crap%20discs/orange.jpg?t=1313290347)
This one is the second best other than the light blue one. It makes a nice orange.  :)

That's it for the discs that US supplies! These pictures can be deceiving, so I would highly recommend getting Lee filters! An interesting thing about the discs though is that you can mix them to get other colors, although the brightness will suffer. Hope this helps!

Pretty awesome!  I love that you showed off the color of the blade by itself AND with each different colored filter - very informative, thanks for that!  I think silver is a VERY underrated saber color, it's an incredibly cool color that has TONS of customization options and has in fact been wielded by some very cool Jedi (Corran Horn anyone?).

Your review was very informative, but I was kind of surprised you found it awkward to wield one handed.  My friend and I both found the Prophecy to be a fantastic single handed saber, both because of the short length and the covertech knob (though it can be taken off).  For this reason, I had sort of pegged it as a good Makashi or Soresu saber, and quite useful for Shien as well.  This is a simple difference in opinion however, it's completely based on the size of your hands as well as what kind of grip you like to have with your saber - we prefer a longer saber for two handed wielding, gives more cutting power.

All this aside, great review of a great saber.  Enjoy your new weapon!

Thanks a lot for taking the time to show the original supplied discs; and also for taking the time to show each and every color (and even describe them on accuracy)! I really appreciate it  :D

Yes silver desperately needs the recognition it deserves! Don't forget the Imperial Knights either!

And on the one-handed thing, my hands are kind of small so it is awkward for me. Although I also own a Liberator which is AMAZING for one-handed usage! I've owned the Liberator longer so I guess I'm just more used to that. I love my Liberator. I might even do a review of it showing the color-changing abilities of Violet Amethyst!

@Danakar Endeel: No problem! I love reviewing things so it was an enjoyable experience for me. Glad it was useful!  :)

Definitely useful indeed!! When I ever get enough funds together to get my first saber, I'm definitely going to look at the Adegan Silver (+Midgrade non-UltraEdge blade) with new respect. I also found out that those little LEE filter booklets are available in my country too!  ;D

So thanks again for the very detailed review. You more than earned some Light Side points from me ;)

Heh, even though I do not own any Ultra Saber yet; I already ordered one of those LEE filter booklets. In my country they had them for sale online for only €4,50  ;D

So if ever I get the money together for an Ultra Saber, I'm going for the Adegan Silver because it has so much potential and would really allow me to have a real personalized saber!!  :P

But one thing that I found odd... RLYHYPERGUY? You mentioned that you couldn't get Red; but why is that? Is it because the white light combined with any red filter would simply not give you a decent red blade color?

I would guess it's quite difficult to get a solid red color using the color discs.  Any colors you make are guaranteed to be slightly washed out looking, due to the fact that you're not using a pure color LED - you will never get the vibrant red unless you use an actual red LED in the saber.  The red color discs tend to make the blade more of a pink color.

It's because it always washes out to a pink lol. You could probably find a really dark red filter (it might look brownish though) except it might be REALLY dim. If you want a bright red them filters aren't the way to go. Oh, and if I were you I would get a staff for your first saber, then you could get one side silver and the one a color (maybe red ;)) of your choice!

Ah, thanks for explaining that guys. Yeah, I figured that it might all turn into different shades of pink. But no worries as I'm more of a Light Side guy myself (and that Orange from the standard color disc looked pretty slick, even for a Sith)  8)

As to the type of weapon. Personally I have no great love for staff-sabers at all. I'm more of the twohanded singlesaber guy. So more the Guardian of SW:TOR if I had to compare it to that I guess (no clue if there's actually a Saber Form that mainly focuses on twohanded singlesaber combat; but if there is, I'd probably feel right at home there)  :P

In Holland I got my booklet from Bax-Shop.nl. It seems to specialize in stuff for DJ's and such. But initially I just Googled it until I found a shop that had them in my own country  :D

Loved the Review.

When I was first thinking of buying from Ultrasabers (way back when), it's always been in the back of my mind to get a Silver blade, just for the sole purpose that you can have virtually limitless color options, especially because I would be one to use two of those disks at once and try to get all kinds of dark saber colors, haha.

Now, I realize that cameras do not, and that's a big do not, accurately represent these LED lights.. unless you've got a nice high quality camera.. but even then, it's still much different in person, totally different effect.

As far as which filters seem better.. Personally, I don't think there's a more suited filter type from one or the other. Lee filters and the disks US supplies both look amazing, and I would want to mix the both of them if I ever got the chance ^.^.

All in all, this is a very nice thread though, I've been wanting to see what the color disks look like since I heard about them... and again, cameras cannot capture the beauty of these lights.

I still want to see an Adegan Silver blade, never seen one in person, but I believe this would be one of the most fantastic colors, even though it seems "plain" to others.

Anyways for those curious google lee filters and go to there website. Then go to contact us, and at the top there should be something about purchasing a swatch book at the top. Click on it and fill out your info. And make sure to enter SWATCH when it asks you for a coupon so you can get it for a penny. Hope that helps others if they're curious about getting these.

Oh - just in case this is helpful; I asked Lee Filters themselves about the swatch book. No response. So I promptly forgot about it, then it turned up in the post a week later! Maybe it helps to be cheeky?

Great review - almost makes me wish I'd made my Prophecy blade silver instead of CG!

No matter, all the better an excuse to order another saber down the road :)

LS points for you!

Their distributors might.  See if there's any in your area and call them or stop by.

I was lucky and found a used swatch-book on Ebay for $7, with shipping.  I'm SO going to try this with the Adegan Silver Bellicose saber I bought my brother, and see how it looks.

If it looks good, I might do that for my next order.

 ;D

@DarthGM. I just got my Lee Filters book and for free. So they definitely work with Adegan Silver? Sorry. This part of saber coloring I'm a noob at. :P Getting me an Aeon V3 for this purpose though and with a standard Mid Grade blade. Thanks for the info on the Adegan Silver and Lee Filters. they are great. =] Got some Jedi and Sith colors picked out. I'm going to try one of the light black filters too to see if it gives a black blade effect.

By all means, let us know how that works out! I mean, I could myself but college is very time-consuming.  :-X

Make sure you use Lee Filters though, as they have the best color quality and brightness. I got my swatch book for 5 dollars somewhere online, but I’ve heard that you can get them for free. The annoying thing about these filters though is that you have to cut them yourself and getting the right size and shape can be difficult.

Do you know if there is anything that makes Lee filters better than Rosco or Gam color?  I have Rosco and Gam books from when I used to work in theatrical lighting and figured I could use them.  Or were you just meaning that the Lee filters are better than the ones that came from US?

Thanks!

I haven't tried those other companies, so better than US.  :)

I know this is an old topic of yours but I love the Dark Green Lee Filter. Its currently in my AS Aeon V3 saber. =] It'll be my main color for costuming and such. Try the Dark Green yourself. its a sick color.

A little off-topic: tell me please, how long works your liberator with fully charged batteries? Mine near 2 hours.

I found that a die cutter of 3/4" makes an excellent choice for stamping out a perfect circle from the swatch book.  I've been using Rosco, but I'm looking forward to trying the Lee's.  You'll find the die cut makes quick work of cutting your color circle...a couole hits with a hammer & you have your filter.  It also makes it easy to get multiple cuts out of the same swatch.  Good luck!

Thank you!  I just ordered a swatchbook at this link for .01 plus shipping with their coupon code.  $5.80 for a swatchbook full of colors for my adegan silver Nickle Monarch is a steal!  Again, thank you for the link!!  I'll let you know how the new filters work out.

OK, this has finally helped to settle my mind.  I've been debating emerald driver vs AS+filters for a while.  An agonizing debate, since getting the Emerald driver would almost certainly have meant no Obsidian or lit AV switch due to $$$ constraints.

This settles my mind, that I can get the flexibility I want in color (if not realization) and still get the look and sound I want in my single-hilt saber.

Thank you for the excellent review!  Point.  :-)

Has anyone tried putting a filter in with a solid color saber? Like you have a red LED and you put in a yellow filter for orange?

Edit: Yes, I see they have

Decided to answer for general informational purposes...  I've done a little filtering of colored LEDs, mainly turning SY into oranges or cyans.  The thing to remember with filtering is that you're removing lightwaves with a filter, and only letting through what the filter will pass.  SO if you have a solid basic color like green, blue or red you're not going to do much of anything with a filter ohter than block blue, which will just darken your blade as you'll be blocking most or nearly all of the available light.  On a mixed color you can do more, but be mindful of what your mixed base colors are, as you will have the most success when you block one color to get more of the other.  Turning VA into deep purple, for example, or more of a red color.

Theoretically you should be able to do the most with white light, as it has ALL of the component colors contained within, but with every filter you're blocking light, so the more you block the dimmer the blade.  Taking white to any "deep" color like blue or red or green blocks most of the actual available light and really dims the blade.  Colors like yellow are made up of a lot more of the total "bandwidth" of color and so they don't dim as much.  Filtering blue or green or red is pretty much a lost cause.

Its funny how this keeps getting replies. I need me a new Lee book and a new Adegan Silver blade. Have you ever tried 2 filters before? Makes for an even nice richer color =]

I have doubled-up on a very light purple to make my own version of VA, which turned out ... ok.  I like the VA LEDs and I can't get the same intensity.  :-)

I may try again, I would like to duplicate my SRD blade...

I'm following Karmack around. Not really but I was subscribed to this thread. :p

To Tag off of Karmack. Apollo filters offers a free swatchbook. Completely free. You don't even pay shipping. They're pretty good quality and you can get two filters out of each. You can get one free book per email address. It's their way of trying to hook you on their filters. They pay shipping and send it to you (can take a few weeks). Although the Lee filters may be a bit better, those end up being $7 of shipping for me with the $.01 for the book itself. I find the Apollo filters to be decent quality (though I don't have Lee filters to compare it to, and don't yet have a saber. [getting there in a few days]). You can't go wrong with completely free.

Very nice review. The Prophecy v3 is a beautiful hilt and I think it looks stunning in Adegan Silver. AS is such an awesome color and I look forward to getting a saber with it. I also appreciate all the effort you put into showing the different filters and the color combos!
