Title: The Scorpion Switcheroo (And Other Mods Too)
Post by: Lord Canterbury on June 06, 2015, 11:00:48 PM
Hey All,

I have to give credit for the actual idea to Darth Logos - he posted it in the Suggestion Box Thread:

Speaking of Scorp colors. I would love to have a classic black one with a Crimson underlay. That would look sweet. :o

After I said I was going to do it myself, the Dark Masked One replied with this:

You must have mad skills, or are just plain mad.

Well, here's your answer!

I'll let you all decide which one it is; mad skills or mad?  (Or perhaps - both.  ;) )

Here are the starting points from both sabers . . .

Scorpion
-  Guardian Blue
-  Blue Illuminated AV Switch
-  Obsidian Sound (No FOC)

Crimson Scorpion
-  Red & Green 2-Channel Emerald Driver
-  Non-Illuminated AV Switch
-  Obsidian Sound

Here's what I ended up with!

Black Scorpion w/ Crimson Insert:

You've probably noticed the pommel by now; I never really liked the look of it the way it comes - that spiked ball look.

I prefer something with a lower profile, so I took the top half of it off & flipped the spikes so they now come up over the body:

Love the way that looks!

Finally here it is lit up.  I installed a Red LED and added an Illuminated Red AV switch.

Crimson Scorpion w/ Black Insert:

Here - I was going for more of a Jedi theme.  Didn't install the Blade or Spikes (I have since put the spikes back on since taking the picture) and used a Blue LED with a Blue AV Switch.

I think the Blue actually gives it perfect contrast to the Red hilt, whereas the Red Blade just kind of flowed into the body.

The Black underlay doesn't have quite the same visual impact here like the other switch out did.

In order to make all this easier - I devised a simple color-coded connector scheme so I could easily & quickly change out both LEDs and Illuminated Switches whenever I feel like it.  Note these are not yet wired for FOC; just single color units.

Bonus Picture

If you remove the Scorpion Emitter - it actually can be used as a bit of an odd "Display Pommel", allowing you to stand your saber up, blade & all.  Pic is just the Hilt, but I tested it with a Heavy Grade blade and it stands upright just fine.

That red underlay underneath the black is a nice contrast, more subtle than I expected it to be.
Either way looks great.

I'm not as into the Crimson saber with black underlay, but maybe that's just me.

Point for you!

Thanks!

Yeah - I noted the black underlay on the Crimson isn't as good as the Crimson underlay for the black Scorpion.

Good stuff Mad Lord C +1  ;)

We think alike, lol, I've colour coded my connectors too in the hilt electronics I've installed, makes it easy to remember when swapping over things...

How did you secure the switches?

Hey Jedi!  All I had to do for the switches was put a little electrical tape around the base and then it was an easy press fit back in.  It's tight enough that it won't come out on its own, but easy enough to pull back out when you want to.

Getting them off in the first place wasn't quite as hard as I thought it would be - using a hair dryer to soften all the hot glue inside did the trick.  The switch & LED Unit came out pretty easily once I melted that.

One word - Shmexy.  Mad skillz Lord C! Many people have talked about doing something like this on the Scorpion when it was new and I think you're the first. It just took you to come along and rock everyone's world :P :D

+1

Yeah I liked the red under the black on the Scorpion the best for some reason. Probably because my inner Sith is coming out :P

Thanks guys!

Yeah - personally, I would only suggest doing it if what you want is the Scorpion with the Crimson underlay for highlights with a Red Blade.

If you're thinking you'd want the black underlay for the Crimson Scorpion- the effect is really not worth the effort.

More points Lord C..... I tried using the electrical tape to press fit an av that I've been holding off gluing in and it works great, so thank you, I'll do this a lot more from now on..... And it's way easier if I want to change switch colour..... Very cool  8)

Excellent mis-matching of the MHS parts. Really makes them unique. :)
