Title: Question about saber LED
Post by: Alucard_lv0 on November 02, 2015, 11:30:36 AM
Hi everyone! I'm waiting for my first saber, a Bellicose with obsidian v3 in blazing red, to ship ;D I was just curious about  the wattage of the LED. I mean i saw in many videos that ultrasabers are quite more bright compared to something like a ForceFx saber by hasbro which should be 6 watts. Am I right? Thanks in advance  :)

Wattage is just a buzzword tossed around by some builders. It's a measure of power consumption, which doesn't always equate to brightness. Moreover, sometimes LEDs are specced at one Wattage but run at another to produce a brighter blade. Finally, as the tech becomes more efficient, LEDs will become brighter while consuming less power.

With that out of the way, and without getting overly detailed on technical specifications, US sabers are lit by some of the brightest LEDs used in saber building. Even one of the single-LED assemblies will outshine any FX sabers. You won't be disappointed.

As Kouri said, wattage isn't the main metric to measure brightness in a LED, it would be Lumens (light intensity).  While I don't have a meter to measure my Aeon, I can assure you that without the blade plug in the saber is blindingly bright and even with the blade plug the brightness overwhelms my camera's optics.  I have a short review video on my Aeon in http://www.saberforum.com/index.php?topic=25879.0 that shows the brightness with the plug installed.

I can actually directly tell you that you will not be disappointed with the brightness as you ordered the exact same saber I did for my first. Bellicose in Blazing Red and it looks fantastic. It is way brighter than FX sabers. The only thing I wished I would've done is gone with the Tri-cree LED instead of just one. The single LED is still unbelievably bright though so don't worry too much :P
