Title: Lee Custom Colors
Post by: DirtyJersey on September 12, 2011, 01:25:29 AM
I thought it might be helpful to Lee Filter users if we show what combination of filters produce which colors. This thread is for displaying your custom colors along with the Filters used to achieve the new color.

I'll start with the "Blood Orange" color as I call it.

I started with these filters over a Blazing Red LED

This is the resulting "Blood Orange"

When I added the Guardian Blue LED to the Blazing Red LED plus filters I achieved a "Deep Pink"

As always, thank you for viewing my post. If it proves useful to you, light points would be appreciated.

Make sure to use the coupon code SWATCH when you order them. I believe someone said you can get the swatch book for 2 cents with that code.

Yeah make sure you do this. You'll get it for only a penny (plus shipping). ;)

Now on topic. So if you take an Arctic Blue LED and add Oklahoma Yellow you get a fantastic green color!

It reminds me a lot of the green you see in the movies, and I'm sure this is close to the Consular Green. I'm sure Nero Attoru will approve. ;D
The only down side of course is it's slightly dimmer. But its still bright, here's a comparison between it and a stock MR Darth Vader ESB.

Here's AB using the Lee Filter True Blue color.

It's actually not much different from the standard AB except it's dimmer and slightly more of a dark blue. I would imagine this is probably close to what Guardian Blue looks like. Here's my AB without the filter so you can see the difference (pay more attention to the area's that are being lit up by the saber and you'll notice the difference more).

For the moment this is all I can do. I have to wait for my batteries to recharge. :D

Using only the "Bastard Pink" filter, I switched on the Consular Green LED, then the Guardian Blue LED and came up with these 2 new colors.

The first is what I call "Margaritaville". It's a pale green like the color of a Slushy Lime Margarita.

This second color is like a "Corn Flower" blue, so I named this one "Blue Harvest". On a color wheel this would be close to #5533dd

It's pretty awesome what you can come up with. :)

For example take AB and the Dark Green Lee Filter and you get this nice minty green color. It's not very bright, but it sure is pretty.

I just came across a neat filter effect by accident. I put the "Spring Yellow" filter into my GB Anakin Stunt with UE Blade, and when I turned it on it was a really beautiful turquoise color. When I swung the saber, the color changed back to the original Guardian Blue. I quickly realized that, because the blade is sanded-to-fit, it doesn't go all the way down to the LED, which leaves room for the filter to move around. So now I have an Anakin Stunt saber that changes from Turquoise(during Idle) to Guardian Blue(on Clash).  ;D

I ordered a swatch book and i'm gonna have some fun mixin colors.  Some questions though.

May i post any discoveries here?
And (possibly noobish)
Is there any possibility of these filters melting on a LED? Due to prolonged exposure?

Feel free to post new color mixes that haven't been posted yet. As for melting, I don't know the answer to that. Although some of the filters are designated as "High Temp" so maybe those are the safest to use. Maybe someone else has better insight to this matter.

Its a gamble.  Dont know if anyone is willing to risk some permanent color changing and experiment by leaving a filtered LED on.  Because i know they supply color discs and those are thick, so i'm sure they wont melt, but isnt the lee fliters just flimsy film?

Maybe some of the Masters or even the dudes at US might shed some light on this.  Clouded the future is, by the dark side of the force.

Interesting idea.  I have an old PVC Dominix in silver that I could try that with, I'll let ya know how it goes.

My guess, from my understanding of the technology, would be that it will not melt.  The heat sink for the LED should keep it from getting too hot on there - plus it's not like anyone leaves their saber on for hours on end anyway.  You'd tear through batteries like crazy that way!

Wondered cause i've done the deed of actually looking down the emitter as i switched it on, and felt some heat right away!  Then i lost vision for a few secs then all was well.

When my dad and used to do sound and lighting for different events, the filters we would use were incredibly similar, if not the same brand, to these. We would hook the filters into these giant spotlights that generated enough heat to roast a full sized turkey and never a single one warped or melted.

Filters like these were originally designed for spotlights and large stage lights that used krypton bulbs, so they had to withstand the enormous heat that the large bulbs created. So no, the filters should not melt.

Do what I do depending on if your saber is something that has MHS style parts just take the emitter off and take a permanent marker and trace the circumference of the MLS. Then cut it out. It will fit snug and it won't be too small. :)

I usually just trace around the open end of my blade with a marker. Then I cut the inside diameter of the circle made by the marker.

dont have MHS parts on my saber so tracing the emitter is out.  Even more out because its an emitter with a slant, so cant make oval shaped filters.  I will have to trace the end of the blade or even the blade plug.

So i began phase one of looking over the swatch book.  But my color experiments were a little thwarted because my batteries were dying.  Here's a little rundown of my process and findings.

I'm no light expert, and for those of you that are, please feel free to correct or critique this, but on that graph on the left of the color, i notice that the best bright colors are the ones that are in the 500nm(nanometer) range and shoot up to high transmission.  I believe this is the ideal range of intensity coming from an Adegan Silver LED.  The colors were bright and distinct, even when going through the blade.  Its very obvious, because on the darker filters, the chart  will have the nanometeres closer to right and low transmission.  I believe that you need a stronger light source for those kind of filters.

I placed my swatchbook on the edge of my bed, and sat on the floor facing the wall, and used my hilt like a flashlight, going through the colors 1 by 1, casting the light onto the wall.  i kept my blade handy, just to see how a color would look through the blade.  i didnt make any cut-outs, i just placed the filter between the blade and hilt.  until i get a little filing system going, i was afraid of cutting out the filters, cause with that many colors, its easy to loose track of what i cut, and what color it is.

Any thoughts on how you will file them?  Maybe an index card box?  I do recall seeing small paper envelopes that may be the right size for the cut outs, suggest looking at office supply stores.

I use my old plastic discs I USED TO use in my sabers to template for my cutting. If I had to identify some of the strongest colors with Lee filters... magenta, greens, and OKLAHOMA YELLOW is the balls. I also liked one called Fire and liked getting a less "Fruit Punch" type of red from Lee than my old discs gave me.

Index card box was my first thought, but the small envelopes would be the best.  i feel like the filters might slide under cards in the box.

Hey I wanna contribute. I couldn't get a lee filter one, but I did get a totally free one from apollo gel. http://www.internetapollo.com/ContactUs/MarketingMaterials.aspx (http://www.internetapollo.com/ContactUs/MarketingMaterials.aspx)
I got some good colors. i have a red one in a SY and got a nice dark orange. I also put another reddish one in a VA and got a pink I assume would be close to Bane's Heart. I got a lot and still need to experiment, but mostly the filters I cut out don't work too well. i found that an orange in a RGB gives you a amber ish instead of yellow, and another darker pink color, more magenta i guess.
if you want pics just say.

I've eagerly waiting on my  Metal Grab Bag with AS so I can play with my Lee filters more, but I love the stuff shown here with the AB led (My DSI has an AB blade) as well (MAN those greens are nice.

Two ideas for both cutting and storing:

Storing: I've just been using a WEE bit of low tack tape to stick the cut out piece of filter back to it's card, that way I know which color is which, and it keeps them all together. Handy, too, since you can easily get two discs out of each filter (for yourself, or a friend).

Cutting: I haven't done this yet, but I will soon. I'm going to get a short (5 - 6 inches) piece of steel pipe that has the same INNER diameter as the outside diameter of my blade, and then I'll sharpen one end of the pipe to turn the ID into a cutting edge so I can use the pipe as a punch. I did this at my old job to make hang cards for some pegs out our displays that were of an oddball size, and it worked like gangbusters. Then you just need a hammer and a wood block and you can quickly punch out a disc.

I'm sure you could find one! There are TONS of color filters and finding a magenta one would be easy. I personally use a filter called "Magic Magenta" and, while I haven't seen BH in person, it does seem pretty close to it from what I've seen in pictures. I've also compared it to my VA saber and it is a more reddish violet.

Daniel,

Thank you so much for this post! I have been going back and forth on the desire between an AB blade and a CG blade, but now I can have both with a $.02 filter, and with - what appears to be - very little loss in brightness!
