Title: New Saber Idea
Post by: mchalk13 on December 01, 2016, 04:21:08 PM
Hey all due to the recent popularity of the Krayts Maw lightsaber I customized by making a Prophecy V3 look like bone, I got to thinking heavily about my next idea for a saber. This next design will hopefully be unlike ANYTHING seen before it that I am aware of. Chances are good that it will not be full contact duel worthy but light sparing should prove to be of no consequence. We have several shops in the area that I live specializing in the fur trade market and many of these have actual leg bones from deer, elk, mountain lion, etc. My plan is to find a leg bone that is the proper internal diameter or very close to it and turn that bone in to a light saber hilt. It will of course have some damage done to it in the form of lightning, saber, and blaster strikes. this saber will take some time for me to complete as I will have to purchase the electronics for it as well, but the HILT itself I should have finished in the next few months and then will just have to wait on money for the guts of it. Please let me know what y'all think of this idea. There is also plans in my head to craft a hilt fully out of wood as well and MAYBE one from stone. Any feedback y'all could provide will prove to be helpful, Thank You.

It sounds like a really cool idea.  Go for it.  ;D

Bone saber sounds wonderful! Wood could be pretty awesome too, but I would be concerned about the structural integrity of a stone one... seems to me it would be a little too fragile unless its something like granite, and even then I'm not sure. beautiful display piece for sure, but I would be afraid to wield it.

Have you considered heat dissipation issues? none of those materials will help dissipate the heat generated by the LED, so you will be solely reliant on the heatsink to do enough. Maybe with some 'damage' in the right areas to create venting you could get around the issue. Or maybe you could use a thin aluminum tube liner for each to help with strength and heat dissipation?

did a little looking around. If I remember correctly, ID of 1.25" is what the sabers need to be, and I found a nice thin walled aluminum tube that is just a fraction over that, but thin enough that putting it inside something else wouldnt make it too unwieldy... https://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=7445&step=4&showunits=inches&id=71&top_cat=0

That's a great idea. Bone would look amazing, and I have often wondered how it would hold up.

I have wanted to see a wooden lightsaber for a long time now, and I think it would be beautiful.

Stone too would be cool. I feel like it would be very heavy, and more for decor than anything else, but it would still be awesome.

Mr. VonBeck, Thank you for finding that, I may use that tube but seeing as how these sabers will MOSTLY be for show and truly not a lot of dueling I may not even wore about heat dissipation. Then again I might lol tough to say at this point. I will hopefully be getting the leg bone here soon to start the design on that one first. My idea for the wood one will evolve four small metal rods running inside the hilt itself (completely concealed inside and out) for better structural integrity.

Cool idea. I will look forward to the pics of your finished saber.
I am a wood worker so the wooden saber gets the wheels turning........... Hum..........

Sounds wicked :).  I actually have a nice chunk of elk antler (my dog eats them lol) I've been saving for the same type thing!  I wanted to make him a saber he can actually pick up and run around with lol.  Gonna teach him to 'duel' with me haha!  I'm actually really excited about it lol.

Plan on doing something like what Corwyn brainstormed- gonna use a blade holder, and some metal tube as a core- but I'll likely go as small an ID as a board will allow, im gonna have to water proof the internals cause he's a drooler lol.

Look forward to watching this- will help me prepare for the antler.  Keep us posted :).
