Title: Top 11 Favourite Action Movies of all Time
Post by: Darth Knox on March 03, 2017, 02:22:42 AM
Who doesn't love a good action movie? Fighting, shooting, explosions! This is gonna be HARD! Please make sure to read all the rules before posting

Rules of the game:
- You are only allowed to pick 11 action movies(that's 10 with a bonus pick)
- Only THREE Honourable mentions are allowed
- Your choices DO NOT have to be in order of favourites

Please remember - That all opinions on movies are subjective. There are no wrong or right answers for the movies you love, so no putting down other peoples picks if they choose someone you disagree with.

Spit, spit, spit! Good list! Dirty Harry very good movie. Temple of Doom, despised by most people too, and I don't know why. By far my favorite Indy film.

Well, ToD was the weakest of the three narrative wise and it didn't help that the movie pushed the boundaries of what was a PG rating at the time. Because it was too violent for a PG rating yet not violent enough for an R, ToD paved the way for the PG-13 rating we have today.

Such a guys movie. I remember when it came out some of the marketing was geared towards convincing women that they would enjoy the film because of all the buff beefcake on display. However, I remember watching it at the cinema. After about 25 mins, the girl I was dating at the time along with every other girl in there had kind of zoned out; they got accustomed to all the man flesh but just didn't engage with the rest of the movie. Meanwhile all the guys were loving the violence! Lol.

Me neither. He's awesome. First movie I remember seeing him in was Dracula 2000.

Can't remember if you are a fan of Lost, but the guy who plays Xerxes was also Paolo in the few episodes of Lost when they tried (and failed) to introduce some new characters.

Yeah the "Expose" episode. Nikki and Paolo. "Paolo Lies", when she really said, "paralyzed" from the spider bites. Buried them alive. They aired that episode, here, just before the release of 300, and billed the episode (I remember) as Rodrigo Santoro's showcase to 300. Constant "sneak peeks after the show" from the local station.
That episode is hated, but I like it. Only one I ever disliked was Jack's tattoo episode

Ah, action films.  One of my favorite genres.  ;D

1. Die Hard
2. Commando
3. Predator
4. First Blood (not only action, but a really good story)
5. The Expendables
6. The Bourne Identity
7. Underworld
8. Star Wars
9. The Mummy (1999)
10. Raiders of the Lost Ark
11. Rush Hour

Honorables:  Under Siege, Soldier, The Matrix.

Hard list to keep to only 14 films.  Some things had to be left off, as I could easily expand it to 20-30 films.  ;D

What?  To me, it's a f***ing awesome film.  I have the whole collection on Blu-ray and I'm looking forward to the new one.  Plus, it stars Kate Beckinsale, one of my favorites.

I thought the premise was great, but the execution lacked depth. I think they are a shade better than the Resident Evil movies. Just my opinion though.

And Kate Beckinsale should be a much bigger star than she is.

I don't look for great depth in action films.  Besides, I see nothing wrong with it.  But, that's just my opinion.  I also loved Michael Sheen's performance in the film and in Rise of the Lycans.  Though, Underworld had to be a bittersweet film for him, given what happened with him and Kate.

Michael Sheen is always good. And he ended up marrying Sarah Silverman, so I think he's ok about what happened to him and Kate.

I need a "little" depth in my action movies. Just a smidge. But as we've said, just our opinions. Not criticising your pick, just found it a curious inclusion.

Yeah, it all worked out in the end.  But, at the time, I'm sure it was devastating for him.  That's all I'm saying.  I mean, she got him the role, then left him for Len Wiseman.  (Ironically, she and Len are now divorced, but that's Hollywood for you)

Title: Re: Top 11 Favourite Action Movies of all Time

Yeah, some of us older school folk still call the first film simply "Star Wars," its original title.  "Episode IV: A New Hope" wasn't added until the home video release, after Empire came out.  Though, the early VHS covers still had the title as just "Star Wars."

As for the Bourne thing, I put "The Bourne Identity" on my list, which is the title of the first film.  So, yes, Matt Damon.  The Bourne Legacy was the one featuring Jeremy Renner.

I think Logos is trying to act smart because there is a lesser-known Bourne Identity movie that was made for tv in 1988.

See? Knox, knew what I meant. Just those who know, know to ask which Oceans 11 someone is talking about: Clooney/Pitt or Rat Pack. Or Gone in 60 Seconds. But if people ask about Ghostbusters, just smack 'em.

I actually didn't know it was MFTV. My parents owned a copy on VHS. I watched it once. I thought the premise was neat, but the execution lacked. I was so tweaked when they made the Damon version.

You know, despite the huge access to movies available through streaming, I really miss the VHS days.

And Bourne saved Matt Damon from going down the Ben Affleck route of years of bad movies and made him a legitimate badass action star. And simultaneously (almost) killed the Bond franchise.

Unfortunately I think Die Another Day is what almost killed Bond. I thought Casino deftly reinvigorated the franchise.

It was a combination of the two. Invisible car plus awful CGI action set pieces in Die Another Day, and then Bourne came out and showed exactly how great, kickass and non-formulaic a spy movie could be. Both movies came out the same year, which made the contrast between the two even higher.

That's why they had to do make Casino Royale the way did. Bourne set the bar REALLY high.

I discern Action from Adventure. Action to me denotes epic fights/shootouts, big explosions, and awesome car chases, usually at the cost of plot or character development. Adventure usually sacrifices from the aforementioned pros to tell a better story. The following list is based on this criteria.

1.) The Fifth Element
2.) The Bourne Identity (2002)
3.) RED
4.) Guardians of the Galaxy
5.) The Matrix Reloaded
6.) Crank: High Voltage
7.) Deadpool
8.) Transformers
9.) Iron Man 2
10.) Smokin' Aces
11.) Battleship

Honorable Mentions: Ronin, Last Action Hero, Star Trek: Into Darkness

Interesting that you pick the Crank sequel over the original.

And, Battleship? Really? This is why I LOVE doing these lists. It clearly states "favourite" in the title, not "best". And that distinction means you get some interesting picks being posted

I think I was half asleep when I watched it (if I watched it) so I remember very little.

Ahem - Die Hard? Arguably one of the greatest action film of all time, definitely one of the best films of the 80s, THE best Christmas movie ever and one of those rare movies that is considered to be (almost) perfect.

Although, I will concede, that on the whole, as a genre, action movies are never going to be amongst the greatest movies ever.

They're martial arts; of course they're action!

And even if that still doesn't qualify, Bruce Lee overcomes everything. ;D

I always thought of martial arts as a separate genre unto itself. I was tempted to do a top 11 for martial arts films, but considered it a bit too niche a subject for the forum

Well, the technical definition of an action film (according to my good friends at google) is a film genre in which the protagonist or protagonists end up in a series of challenges that typically include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, and frantic chases.

However, the interpretation of that definition can lead to some interesting choices

Well, the technical definition of an action film (according to my good friends at google) is a film genre in which the protagonist or protagonists end up in a series of challenges that typically include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, and frantic chases.

However, the interpretation of that definition can lead to some interesting choices

I don't actually think I've watched 14 movies that are classified as Action. It seems like you guys have been putting MCU in the lists, so I could easily make one out of them, but I don't really feel like those are action movies, and more of adventure. If you know what I mean.

The MCU are comic book movies that contain action and adventure (and comedy). But they are generally classed as CBM movies first and foremost

Exactly why I wouldn't put them in a list.

I think we already did a top 11 comic book movies. Sometime last year.  (I really should keep a list of which topic we've covered. Might help ensure I don't duplicate myself as happened at the beginning of this thread).

The debate over what constitutes an action movie is moot because Darth Knox put STAR WARS on his list.

You're fired. It's the best genre. :P

Also, how can Iron Man 2 but not The Avengers make your list, and Star Trek: ID over the first remake? Your opinions are so messed up. ;)
1) Shut up, 2) better villains, and 3) shut up. Just because that's the only genre you watch doesn't qualify it as the best.  :P

Better villains in IM 2 or ST: ID?

Not quite true, but mostly.

Yes. Plus I'm a bigger fan of Cumberbatch, Rourke, and Rockwell than I am of Bana and Hiddleston.

Loki is more gleeful than evil
